Rusty..................Play it by ear! If your groups start opening up? Clean it. If you feel the bullet/sabot is getting hard to push down? Clean it! I am sure a lot has to do with the powders used. Some burn more dirty than others. Richard

After my first hundred rounds, I took the Brownell's Sabot Cleaner to it, just cuz. There was very, very little shiny black burned plastic that came out on the patches. It appeared to have been where the lands and grooves meet, just a few very small, thin slivers. It was a very far cry from all the plastic I got out of the factory .50 after only half that many rounds. I haven't cleaned it since and got fantastic groups last fall at the range.
Richard probably has the best advice.........don't worry about it until your groups open up.

Rusty, I clean mine about once a year but then I dont shoot anywhere near as much as Richard does. I clean the plug about every 30 shots or so. actually I have twin plugs, new style savage plugs recessed by RB and I just change them out if in the middle of a range session if need be. I clean the barrel with carbon killer and drop the plug in and let it sit over night. it works great. If you shoot naked then eliminator works great for the copper fouling.
shooting vitavouri powders I think I could get by with never cleaning the barrel. I have fired over 100 shots and the bullets still push down smooth.....Bill

Thanks guys, everything you say makes a lot of sense. One more question, how do you clean the threads? I bought a bore guide from Rossman and love it but still have trouble cleaning the threads. How do ya'll do it? Thanks again , Rusty

Rusty I use a shotgun cleaning rod that I loc-tite the sections together on.Its only purpose in life is to clean threads.I start by blasting some shotgun/choke cleaner into the thread area. Use either a slightly oversized bore mop or brush with a patch or 2 wrapped around it. You want a tight fit.

I have a chamber cleaning rod, actually a stiff cable with a handle. On it, I use a 12 ga shotgun bronze brush. Cleans teflon tape out of the thread area very well. If I am cleaning anti-seize out of the threads, I wrap the brush with a solvent/alcohol/brake cleaner soaked patch. Boarhog
