Sunny, 35 to 50* only a slight breeze picking up by late morning. I had two benchrest wind flags with vanes, tails and daisy wheels for wind direction and velocity............Most of the time they just lay idle
.45 cal. load information............
Since I had some good results with one of my stand by Triplex loads last week and I wanted a little more velocity, I upped the middle powder by two grains and kept the rest the same. 10/22/35 of N-110/N-120/H-322. I only loaded enough for two five shot groups.
Group #1 was just on a whim.........using a 180 XTP It just did not work well.........Surprising though, on the fourth shot, I forgot to seat the bullet further than my short starter............every time I have done this, I get no ignition..........It does however, totally mix up the powders.........I seated the bullet and while the velocity dropped some 150 fps, I nailed the center of the target Here again, getting these powders mixed causes no problem.........just lower velocities!
So, on groups two, I used the 200 gr. SST Good low ES velocities and close to one of my best groups ever...........If that second shot had only cooperated
After reading all the stuff Deadeye has published here, I decided to try his load of 54 and also 56 gr. of H-4198 but with the 300 gr. FTX since there were no Parkers in my load box ;D Not good! Yes, maybe deer good but not bug hole good The load seemed to be sensitive to velocity differences. If I got a much higher velocity? the shot seed to want to go to the left and opened it up? Still, nothing approaching 1/2" groups. Both the 54 and 56 gr. loads at 100 were nothing to brag about. In any event, I took the 56 gr. load to 300 yards Shot #1 the slowest of the five went way to the left. (from my 100 yard POI, I knew the 300 yard group would go left anyway).......Shots 2,3,4&5 which were higher velocity grouped a terrible7.7" with all five going into 12"
For group six I went back to 100 yards with another tweaked duplex and it showed some promise so I shot my last five at 300 and came in with a 3" group. I would have liked to shot the triplex at 300 but was fresh out! This load will be revisited next week.
