Do I need to replace the recoil lug when converting the Rem 700 ml to smokeless with a Pac nor 45 cal barrel.

While I have never played with one, I would suspect they cut the barrel shoulder for the stock Remington lug. If you wanted a after market thicker one, you would have to give them the "exact" thickness (measured with a micrometer) so they could adjust the shoulder accordingly. Richard

The Pacnor "DD" 700ML barrel is purposely made for a stock 3/16" (.186") thickness lug. That lug combined with "Hunters" extended bolt nose kit and a Savage 10ML-II breechplug, puts the tip of the breechplug just past the lug. This puts the high pressure area just into the thickest part of the barrel for safety. You can use the original lug if you aren't going to bed your action but an aftermarket with the proper thickness and tapered sides will make bedding much easier and put less stress on your bedding because of the much larger lug area. I and others recommend not going with a contour that matches the factory barrel fearing the results of an accidental double load. The barrel needs to stay at least 1" in diameter for the first 5" and not under .8" for the rest of it's length. A contour that has been proposed to savage-barrels .com has all the dimensions of a Pacnor #6 except the muzzle dimension is bumped up to .8". I suspect this would be considered a custom contour by Pacnor, or you could go with the heavier #7, but I don't know if the #7 will fit into a modified factory forearm or not. I do know the Modified #6 will with some sanding.

You do not have to replace it but if you wanted lets say a tapered lug that is machined flatter than the stock remington lug I and many have gone with a Callahan .186 tapered SS lug from Midway. The call is yours. www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=156560Hope this helps

The thing with the 700ML recoil lug is that it has a 3/8" slot cut down the center. Since the factory breechplug is shorter, to get a bore length ramrod that didn't stick past the muzzle the slot had to be cut. If you go with a Pacnor using a Savage breechplug you do not need the recoil lug looking like a divot puller or tuning fork.
