We were back at the range yesterday, richard, bill and me.
I hadn't shot the 45 cal the last 2 weeks but got her out yesterday.
What I wanted to do was check out the high speed load that I had shot a few weeks ago.
I started out at 100 yds with 3 shots of each load:
N110-5 grs/H322-69 grs. Avg--2779
N110-10 grs /H322 -69 grs. Avg--2973 fps
N110-15 grs/H322-69 grs. Avg--3109 the last time I had shot this load it averaged 3112fps.
All 3 loads shot very well at 100yds.I was playing with the scope settings because I was going to try the fast load at 300 yds.
The wind was not giving us any breaks because it was pretty strong most of the time.
The first shot at 300 I shot at a paper target that had a light red dot and really couldn't make it out to good.Couldn't tell where it hit.The second shot the wind got sort of still and shot it on my black home made target with 1x1 inch squares on it.Couldn't find where it hit either so bill said he would watch the wind flags and tell me when to shoot. The first one went about a foot to the right but up and down was about perfect. So shot the other 2 and got a 2 1/4 in group.
Now I had shot 14 shots with the load (s)
Then I want ed to try one of my favorite loads. The first2 went about 2 inches apart,I noticed that I was getting about 100 fps slower than what I had gotten with this load the last time. The next shot is what I think was a blown sabot it read 1900 where I was getting a little over 2700 the first 2 shots.Loaded up another and it gave me a 4in group.
Was going to try 5 shots but the next one blew another sabot reading was little over 1200 fps.
I decided to clean the rifle and try to find out why it started blowing sabots.
The vent was .033 so no problem there.Ran a patch down the barrel and got what looked like a black paste out.Now I usually don't clean my barrels between shots. This was the first time I had gotten this much fouling out of my barrel even after 100's of shots.
After cleaning I shot it once to see if it blew a sabot and it shot ok even sounded stronger.
Think I will start cleaning the barrel between different loads now.
Getting back to the targets when we went to get them the bullet we couldn't find was inside the one in. square.
At 3100 fps the 200 sst only drops 12.2 in.
As I said before this would make a heck of a varmint load.
