Can someone explain the difference in detail and pros/cons in detail? I am under the impression that regular 243 can be shot in a AI, but that shoulder angle is different in the AI chamber. Does shooting a regular .243 fireform to the AI when you do this? Also just how much speed is gained in the AI? Thanks Rman

R-man. You are correct. A .243Win can be shot in an AI to fireform to the new chamber dimensions. The Win has a 20deg shoulder angle while the AI sports a 40deg shoulder. This gives a little more capacity in the case while getting additional case life. One downside is that the short case neck although the same length as the original .243Win will tend to give shorter throat life than a longer neck such as a 6mm Rem AI. I used a .243 takeoff barrel and had it switched to my 30/06 Rem 700 and the Smith had a 6mmAI reamer and did the chamber. Mine shoots nice with the new Hodgdon Hybrid 100V powder and 95gr Win/Nosler CT bullets. That is an option you could do on your .243 Win , but you would have to fireform a 6mm Rem. A .243AI should yield you 150 fps while a 6mmAI may yield an additional 300fps more than your stock .243 Win. Check out www.6mmbr.com. They go into the details comparing the different 6mm's and the pro's and cons of the AI's. Good Luck with your modification--whichever you choose.

Also, since there is less taper to the 243AI you get less case stretch, which means less case trimming and longer case life...as long as you don't load it so hot as to blow the primer pockets.

Soo guys that it really interesting as I have a really nice Rem 700 SS laminate with a Leupold VX III with the Boone and Crockett reticle. It is pillared and glassed. I was thinkin of selling it as my goal was to have a nice flat shooter with alot less recoil then the 30-06. 2 neck surgeries prompt this. Anyway I figured I would take a beating on the sell and spend a ton of fixing up a nice short action. Now you got me thinking about rebarreling the LA I have. What about a long action 6mm on the '06 bolt face? Any suggestions?

Rifleman, Not a problem. That's the action that I used on my 6mmAI. A 6mm Rem like the .257Roberts is not the best match for the 2.8" Rem short action. Bullets have to be seated deeper to fit the magazine whereas the long action rebarrel that I did can be re-throated so that the bullet that you plan to use need not be seated any deeper than the neck. Or did you mean that you wanted a custom 6mm/06 AI? My good friend just had Hart build one for him and he loves it. The only thing I would recommend is to request a 1/8" twist. That way you could handle the 115gr DTAC bullets if you so desired. The '06 case is probably too big and will shorten throat longevity. The 6mmAI will give maximum efficiency and give you plenty of power for the largest whitetails. Check Gun Broker for .243 SS take off barrels. I scored my blued .243 never fired barrel for $30! My Smith did the barrel switchola and the re-chamber along with a set of Redding dies all for $150! I think that worked out well.

I could just go back to a 25-06 too I spose. But after thinkin it over, I just might keep the 30 cal just in case and start from scratch with a .243. I guess a guy always needs one more rifle.
