3/16" Callahan tapered shank (Midway). This is perfect for bedding with the tapered sides, and compatible thickness to work with the Pacnor DD and hopefully Savage-barrels.com. Thicker lugs require the barrel shoulder being cut back to get the headspacing close with a Hunters bolt kit creating a possible safety issue. I've posted this before that the DD barrels by design of using hunters bolt kit, Savage breechplug, and a 3/16" (.186") recoil lug puts the pressure area just past the barrel threads for strength and safety.

The remmy 700 centerfire conversions use the 1/4 or .250 recoil lug as per Pac-nor or DD the remmy 700ml use the 3/16 recoil lug as per pac-nor or DD.

And as fishhawk stated the tapered sides make it easier to remove once the action has been bedded.

Thanks killitgrillit, I wasn't aware that the centerfire used a different thickness lug. I haven't done one of those yet. Good to know.

Talked with Penny and Casey from Pac-nor Friday and the 700ml is machined with the 3/16" recoil lug.

Ok thanks, I will probably go with Savage-barrels for my conversion though.

Oh, by the way anybody using the Callahan lug on a 700ML with the factory syn. stock. the Callahan is about .070 longer, so you have to do some relief work in the bottom of the lug slot for clearance.

Greg, will the factory 700 ML lug work or do we need to buy a Callahan lug? I have 2 700 ML actions and both lugs are .192. I understand the Callahan lugs are longer but why change? I am having a hard time understanding this, can you explain this better for me, or can you PM me your phone so I can call you and talk about this, thanks

There's no problem with the .192 thickness of the factory lug. You can use it if you want. If you are going to bed the action and lug to the stock it make things more difficult to use it. The straight sides of the lug where it reaches into the slot make it difficult to pull from the bedding epoxy, evenwith multiple layers of tape for clearance. You would have to tape around the sides and bottom as usual but also inside the slot where the ramrod slides through. Getting that all to pull out would likely present problems. Also the reduced surface of the recoil flat will put higher pressure on your bedding epoxy under shooting recoil. Conclusion, if your not bedding, it's fine to leave it there. If bedding, I think it is a good idea for more than one reason, and it's only $28. Don, I will PM you my phone # anyway.
