I use a cheap CenterPoint 4x16x44 on one of my 45s just for long range target shooting. Its held up surprising well and ive gotten my 2nd best 200 yard group with it.
Personally i try not to go over a 44mm scope to keep LOS closer to the barrel. A good 40mm will gather nearly as much light without the need for really tall rings. The steel Durasight QR rings and bases i use now max out at a 40mm. Great Knight steel rings and bases for $9.99.
You may have to pay a little more but i would look at 4x16x40s with a fine cross hair/s and good glass. That Nikon 6x18 sounds like a good place to start IMO if you like it.

Can't go wrong with a 3 x 9 Leupold VXII IMO with fine duplex. About $300. That's all you need for hunting at any sane range. You can make your own targets for 300 yds that look exactly like the ones you would shoot at 100 yds which helps take the magnification element out of shooting at long range....IMO

A 4-12x40 would be a good choice. Natchez I believe has the Bushnell 3200 on sale. I have a 4.5-14 VXIII on my .50 Omega and absolutely love it on there but its just temporary.

Wow, you guys like big scopes. How far do you plan on shooting and what do you think your average long hunting shot will be? I wish I could tell you I'm shooting a top of the line scope, but I've made due with an old Simmons whitetailer 3 1/2 x10x40 that has worked fine. For most of my 150 yard shots at deer, I just grabbed a handful of a turn that worked out to be 7 or 8. It is supposed to always rest on 3 1/2 and I wish it where really 2 1/2 when one comes in close for the wider field of view. Most of my average long shots here in Illinois go 150 and I really dont need the 10x for that., if I have alot of time I use it, but I/ve noticed for 200 yards, to judge a deer properly, I should probably use a spotting scope.

Natchez has Nikon's on sale now. They have the Prostaff 4-12x40 marked down pretty low.

grizzlyHe asked about high power scopes. Personally i usually dont go over 2x7s or 3x9s for hunting but for long range target shooting i do like more. Hunting smaller game or varmints they might be helpful too but for deer ive never needed that much magnification......yet Right now im pretty happy with the new Redfield Revolutions. You can get a standard or Accu-range recticle starting at $129.

thanx abunch guys....
i figure x4 power should be fine in the woods & the x16 should help out in the wide open,we have both & often you are hunting both from the same stand.
i ended up getting the 4-16x50 nikon monarch with BDC.......i have a couple places i hunt where the shots can approach 300 yards & much farther,i have taken 2 deer at close to 200 yards with my 20ga. but i never tried farther shots because the hornady load is 1800 FPS.......with my new elite i plan on hunting at 2200 FPS with a .40 bullet & hope to make that 300 yard shot.....if & only if, i can do it on targets first! but there is one spot 300 yards away, every year i see a monster buck or two just standing there....and next year i want to beable to do something about that.lol.
so i am preparing now.....
