I'm not clear about how you guys are using your PN bbls. Seems some are using them on Savages, some Encores, etc. Are y'all getting them in .45 to shoot sabotless, or just replacing the factory .50 bbl. with a more accurate tube? It's unclear also when reading some of the posts (especially with load data) to know how your gun is set up/how you're loading it (with/without sabots//caliber). I'm considering getting a barrel to shoot sabotless and want to be sure I know what I'm doing/getting so I won't be disappointed. Do you guys have a favorite supplier (PN, SMI, etc.)? How successful/practical is .50 cal. sabotless?
Thanks again and again for the great board, advice, and camaraderie.

I can think of only one reason to get a .50 barrel for a build.....that being you will be hunting in a state which allows nothing less.
A .45 barrel can shoot saboted .40 bullets as well as .45 bullets sabotless.
If you go to the Loads PDF's, you can see that they are separated on the .45 pages by sabot loads as well as sabotless loads.
The PN barrels (as well as others) are being used on many builds including the 10MLII, Encores, Rem 700ML, and CF conversions.
What do you plan putting a barrel on?

The .50 cal is not practical at all sabotless.Several have been there, tried that and are not going back.Bare in mind that you can shoot .40 saboted and .45 sabotless as Danno told you.The aftermarket barrel of choice has been the Pac-Nor and for good reason. They shoot sub-moa right out of box. When you purchase a .45 Pac-Nor you are buying 28 inches of barrel. This makes her barrel heavy for sure.BUT,since you are wanting to shoot sabotless this is a blessing as you can have it cut down to what ever length you desire. Most do the 25-26 in barrel. You may or may not beware that Tom Post at Swinglock can make you a fully adjustable full form die to size bullets to shoot sabotless. If you chose to do this you will need your barrel drop from Pac-Nor.I do not know what your experience level is in regards to shooting sabotless but it is involved and can be very aggravating. I initialy got the drop but after shooting saboted I will probally not fool with it as life is good with the sabots!

I must aggree with Tar12.... Mine(PacNor.45) shoots under moa out to 200yds (so far) saboted. The sabotless is just a plus..........if I ever hunt somwhere that wont allow a .40 bullet. Well worth the $ spent

I'd most likely just get a bbl. for my encore. Any more great advice?
Thanx a MxM

The 45 PacNors are really easy to get up and running. My Savage shoots 1 inch at 200 yards with 60 grains of H=4198, 195 Barnes expander, smooth blue Harvester sabot, and CCI 209m primer, velocity in the 2600 f/s area. Many that try smokeless never go back. The performance and convenience put the smokers in the gun safe and they remain there. Sometimes it takes some tweaking to get THE load and there is a learning curve with smokeless. But most everything has been worked out on this board in the past. Get your barrel. set up your rifle, and post often. This is a great board with many good people that will help if you need it.

I originally got my 45 Pacnor to shoot sabotless. However, it shoots 40 cal bullets in sabots so good I gave up on the sabotless route.

The .50 cal is not practical at all sabotless.Several have been there, tried that and are not going back. In a stock savage or other similar quality barrel I agree, but my douglas SMI barrel shoots the thor/barnes sabotless very very well. I haven't worked with the .50 ftx much but have no doubt with a little knurling it would shoot as well. I think the key is barrel quality and tight specs, similar to the pacnor .45s. I think a pacnor .50 would shoot sabotless just as well as their .45s. That said I'm having a .45 built
