There are 7000 grains in a pound. BH209 comes in 10 ounce containers. There are 16 ounces in a pound. So you take 7000grns and divide by 16. This will give you the number of grains in one ounce. The number of grains in one ounce x 10 will give you the number of grains in a jug of BH209.
Example: 7000 divided by 16 = 437.5grns per ounce.
437.5grns x 10 ounces = 4,375grns per jug of BH209
So now you take your favorite load by volume and and weigh it on a scale. 100grns by volume equals 65.6grns by weight. I checked this on two different powder measures.
I will list an example.
You can get 66.69 shots out of a container of BH209 if you shoot 100grns by volume. Thats 4,375grns (10 ounces) divided by 65.6grns by weight. Cost per shot from Natchez would be $26.99 divided by 65.6 = 41cents per shot.
Of course if you dont live near natchez you will pay a $20.00 bucks hazmat fee. Thats when you get some buddies and order primers, bullets, powder all at one shot. That hazmat fee is a set price for no matter what or how much you order.
Sportsmans wharehouse is selling it for $28.99....$28.99 divided by 65.6= 44cents per shot. When using 100grns by volume, and 65.6grns by weight.

Actualy Semisane got it right, 100gV of BH209 weighs about 70g on the balance beam......:
SemiSane wrote:
"Nope! That doesn't work Grouse. You forgot one important step. One hundred grains volume of BH does not weigh 100 grains. You have to convert your volume measure of BH to it's actual weight before you divide it into 4,375 grains.
So, if 100 grains volume of BH actually weighs 70 grains (approximate/guess), 4,375 divided by 70 equals 62 shots per 10 oz. container."[/color] Hope this clears things up

And my 120 gr charges of BH209 come out to .54 per shot.
(I use 70 gr by weight = 100 gr by volumn, so my 120 gr by volumn weigh 84 grains on a scale)
That is completly acceptable to me.

After shooting about 1500 (yes thats not a misprint 1500) shots out of my Encore 209x50 using nothing but three fifty grain pellets of Pyrodex RS combined with a additional 500+ shots using 130 grain charges of 3-F 777 in loose powder form, it only took three shots using BH209 to convert me forever. I would not care if BH209 cost $1.00 per shot. Never having to deal with all the down sides of Pyrodex and 777 makes BH209 well worth every penny IMHO.
I don't even want to add up what I spent on using over 4500- 50 grain pellets of Pyrodex and at least five pounds of 3-F 777.
I guess we know have some idea how our ancestors felt when the very first cartridges came out using smokeless powder.

I'm down to my last jug of both BH209 and 777 and it's time to make a final decision on what I'm going shoot going forward. I figure BH209 costs me approx. $40 a jug ...when I buy 4 jugs and include the haz-mat and shipping charges. My local gun shop has 777 for $20. And it doesn't look promising I'll be able to buy BH209 locally, as the few shops here have no intention of stocking it...just not much interest yet. I shot my Omega and Knight Elite yesterday with 777 kinda like a last hurrah.. and although it shot accurately,,,, It's BH209 only now ! Just gotta convince my 7 MZ buddies to switch too and share the haz-mat and shipping.

I suggest you order as many 209 primers and as much of every powder that you use that your budget will allow. prices are only going to go up!! Powder valley also have T7 and Pyro so there are many ways to put an order together. I have done a lot of business with Powder Valley and about the only primers they have left are a few 209s. make the order big, spread it around with your buddies and the cost of shipping is less than you could drive to your local shop. I am not advocating deserting the local shops, but they don't have what you want so order now. several thousand primers and other powders make the order quite reasonable. Ken

Group buys are the way to go. My shooting club member get together and order in the nieghborhood of $1500.00 at a time from powder valley, we then split the cost which reflects a dollar to each ound of powder, and they will ship powder and primers in the same box. I just place anothe order for $544.00 and the shipping was only $14 and of course the Hazmat but still a load cheaper than the local stores. lou

I stand corrected that was the quote over the phone, when I arrived to snatch the very last container, they said it was on sale for $39.99--same as out there! Just got my Triumph with the Omega 3X9 and am itching to try it-but have to wait till Monday, because of work--when they're predicting rain and lots of it! Dang! After I shoot it in, I'm going to give my BH a try, but dang this stuff is either gold or 'fools gold' which is it? Have a great day! Dave

It's gold, but hopefully the value of gold will eventually go down. As a suggestion if I had a brand new triumph that never had any of the corrosive BP subs in it I would probably keep it that way, forever. Unless you find that your gun doesn't lik BH209, which is highly unlikely. If it works in your gun I would buy a case of it online and never look back. If you find it doesn't like BH209 then go to the corrosive subs and you will still be a happy camper. Got any pics of the new rig?

YH86: Here's my Triumph waiting for the rains to cease. It has that Omega scope on it, suggested here, and has Leopold Rings and a Weaver base, made for Omega's and Encore's. Picked up another container of BH209 for $31.00 at Trop's Guns near Lancaster PA. Can't wait to get her on the range! Plan on shooting BH 209 and using Shockwaves 250-grains. A friend bought my Traditions and I'm going to miss it. So, we hope to be shooting them side by side tomorrow. I think it should be interesting! Have a great day! Dave

Thanks: The thing on the left, is an Alberta Wolf, they don't grow big up there--short growing season! ;D Still don't get exactly what a short black sabot it. I have shockwaves made by T/C and they have black sabots. A sample of 5 also came with the gun...same exact things. Still trying to get all this straight, but it's coming. If you have time, show me a 'short black sabot.' That would help ease my mind. Sometime soon, I'm going to take a photo of all the stuff I bought in the last month. But man. am I having fun learning and hopefully my friend and I will get sometime together shooting and hunting. I know you already know, but I love this place! My mind is a little boggled right now, see the prayer list. Have a great day! Dave

Just saw the picture. Does that sabot have a stepped base or it is it a smooth transition?

Not sure what you mean, but the base is right below the slits and it is hollowed out beneath that. Gees, I feel like a dummy, but appreciate all the help! Have a great day! Dave

That sabot is not a short black harvester. There is no guarantee what the next box of Shockwaves will have either. Best to throw them out and buy your own. i would guess that's a MMP HPH12 sabot by the looks.

This is what they look like with the bullet in them. They shot good groups at 100 in my Traditions but were a tight fit, tough to load. Are you sure? I can't throw them away, there all I have at the moment, and hope to be shooting in 12-hours! I can't tell from the catalog photos. Have a great day! Dave

Check out the thread I just posted in this forum. It should help you SEE the differences between the sabots. I would have posted it here but starting to get a little off the original topic.

I like the short petals for all types of Bullets, If yours are too long use a large nail clipper and put the petal in to the cross bolt and cut it will cut them just the right amount. I find the short petal to aide in accuracy. Lou
