Thanks to Deadeye generosity I was able to test this bullet, results are very good, it penetrated 7 1/4 inches into my test block [excellent] recovered weight 275.4grs, good for a jacketed bullet. Recoil mild, I used 53grs of H4198, the same load I use for the 290gr. Barnes TMZ. If it held together, it would be a top pick in jacketed bullets, In game it might do much better [holding together] Once again thanks Rick. Marty

300 Barnes X bullet 8 1/4 inches perfect muchroom zero weight loss 70 grs H4198 350 Barnes 9 1/2 inches perfect muchroom zero weight loss 68-69grs H4198 400 Barnes Buster Bullet, 21 inches plus zero weight loss 71grs of Benchmark deadeye these are the leaders in penetration, all are Cooper Bullets, no lead core.
On jacketed Bullets, Nosler Partition was the best, it was a bullet that Smokeeter modified if your BE would have held together it would have been rite at the top, as far as penetration.

Looks like the Buster 400 is a reusable bullet.

Almost, nose a little flatten, base flared, this after going thru sven inches of wood and the block, and barn wall a total of 21 plus inches.

Marty.........Nice chart! By the way, what is this "block" you have that you use for these tests? You probably mentioned it one time..........? Do you ever do the bundled wet newspaper thing? Richard

Richard,
Wet newspaper is too soft, What I do is tape 6 or 7 magazines together, one inch thick one's are the best, and keep adding, than tape them together, until I have a 30 to 40 pound block. For big boomers I add a nose, made up of 6 to 8 inches of old dry 2X4's A number of folks, bullet makers and the like, have said my test is worthless since no animal is made of wood, no doubt they are right, but if a bullet will go thru 6 to 8 inches of my block, it will d**n sure go thru an animal. Besides I like doing it, its fun With the Barnes 350gr X bullet, and the Buster bullet, IMHO their is no animal they wont punch a very large hole thru.

Why not just use a solid made for a .458 Win mag ? If bustin through max stuff is the goal that would seem to be the obvious solution. I would consider a 500 grainer.

The 500grs bullet will not stabilize, in the Savage, bullet too long.

Well that is funny Marty, Rick Bibby told me about shooting it along time ago with success, he told me it kicked a little though with his load. We both got a chuckle out of that one.

Rifleman, Rick gave me load info for the 500gr. Speer Tungstun solid, he felt we could push it close to 2000FPS. He explained that Tungstun being heavier than lead made the bullet shorter. I called Speer, they no longer made it and didn't any in stock, and didn't know who had any. At the time they were 3,85 each. If you are implying I am being less than truthful in my statement made by Rick, I have a full page e-mail titled "Big Game Medicine", from Rick, as we offen discuss load development. He very generously gave credit for helping in load development In any event, if you are calling me a lair, its a good idea to do at long distance. Have a fine day

As to 500gr. bullets in general, When I read about Hornady's Dangerous game 500gr. bullet, at the time Brother Rick wasn't taking phone call's I e-mail Edge who has given me load info for big boomers, and asked about the 500gr. 458 Lott DGX, It also was Edge opinion, it might be a problem in the Savage. So I drop the idea and went with the Buster Bullet. In my many discussions with Rick, he stated the heaviest bullet he worked with was the Speer 350gr. Hot Core, If I had gotten the Tungtun bullets he would have added it to his load info.

Well Marty of course you just pushed my buttons, but in the interest of being a gentleman I will contact you via PM and we can discuss things there.

I spoke to Rifleman, and I think we put this subject, disagreement to rest, If I might quote him "life is to short" and since I said what is said, I agree with him.
