What is the difference in the twist rate of a .45-70 handi rifle barrel and an SMI douglas barrel in .45 Cal. I guess what I am getting at is; Is the twist rate of a 45-70 barrel the same as what would be optimum for a true .45 cal muzzle loader barrel? Joe

The normal HandiRifle 45-70 is a 1:20 twist.

Thanks Edge, I am just trying to figure out if a custom barrel is worth the added expense over a 45-70 conversion?

Edge how is your marlin doing? It looked quite interesting and well thought out.

I rarely shoot it as I normally want a high BC bullet, but two weeks ago I took a doe during a snow storm stalk. 50 yards with a 300 grain Remington sized and knurled.
Result was about a 65 yard death run with a blood trail Stevie Wonder could follow.
For a walk through the woods with shots rarely over 100 yards it is a hard rifle to beat. Light and fast make it a near perfect brush gun.... If it had a better trigger and a better quality barrel it would probably be used most of the time!
I need to try sabots more to see how they shoot a better BC bullet a bit faster.

SMI will do whatever twist you want.

Edge thank you I was just wondering. I'm considering a 40cal. build down the road. The Marlin is cheaper than a Remington or Savage action.Jon

Thanks Edge, I am just trying to figure out if a custom barrel is worth the added expense over a 45-70 conversion? As far as Handi rifles go is what I am asking. I have seen testimonies to the accuracy of the blue harvester and 195grn Barnes in the conversion. Does the Douglas .45 drop in barrel lend itself to sabotless shooting more? I am really trying to weigh the pros and cons. I am so curious to find out that I want to do both. Can't afford that

Saboted, I found that it shoots well everything that my Pac-Nor shoots. I think that moto shot mostly sabotless with it and got some good results. I tend to believe that you can go with any combo that you can shoot with a pac-nor and get similar results in both. Zen

Zen.. Thanks for the testament to the SMI Douglas barrel. At $360 from SMI, I guess that is a bargain for a drop in custom barrel. Do you find the SMI breech plug to be as good as a Savage breech plug? Joe

Little joe, to shoot sabotless, I believe the SMI douglas will do a better job. Tighter tolerances and less likely to be bore to bore variations that you'll likely find with the H&R stock barrels. The SMI breech plug I have does everything it's supposed to. Holds a primer and the powder goes bang Mine has a carbide plug, you might ask SMI about this as an option as they did mine.

Sorry, I don't. I did mine as a package deal, back when they were $350. I think they've gone up since then?
I think they charge about $100 to do a 45/70 conversion which includes their machine work and bp. I wouldn't think the carbide bushing would add that much, but just don't know.

Ok, here's the plan; I am ordering an H&R Talo exclusive Trapper .45-70 model with the 18.5" barrel. I am going to have SMI do the conversion to it. Then I am going to swap the stock off of the Pardner 20 ga. I have with the Trapper. With the full size stock on the 20 ga. I will order a 26" SMI Douglas .45 barrel. So I guess I will do both! The trapper should be a dandy youth gun with the short stock. Now I have to figure out which twist rate to go with in the Douglas barrel. Joe
