I use my Savage ML for hunting, shooting it perhaps 50 or 60 times over an average year. Should I have a spare breech plug? If so, why? I did pick up a couple extra vent liners, but I am not clear about the plug. Thanks.

IMO, the only reasons to have more than one would be if you shoot subs or perhaps let it rust. If you get a VL stuck and can't get it out it would be handy to have a spare.
While it is not that hard to get a stuck VL out, if it happened on a day that you wanted to hunt you could miss a day of hunting working on it. Or on a hunting trip the snout becomes too fouled with carbon to load the primer without deforming it....etc.
If you regularly take it out and keep it rust free then there really is no reason for more than one.

The average shooter will never wear out a breech plug. Mine have several hundreds of shots on them and still going strong. Mike

Here's my take on this: I'd get one for one simple reason. If ANYTHING ever happens to your breech plug for any reason you'll have a spare. It could rust, the VL could get stuck, you could damage the threads drilling out the crud build up, etc. The only part of this gun that gets serviced is the breech plug. The gun will last a lifetime but the breech plug may not. Savage, like a lot of companys, could shut down for reasons unforseen. Get one, put it away, and you'll never have to worry about it. Cheap insurance. Just my opinion.

I have close to 4,000 documented shots thru my recessed Savage breech plug and I always carry a spare to the range. Just makes sense to me. Richard

All info above is good. For the price I feel a spare is good insurance. Jon

If you should happen to drop your BP onto a concrete floor while cleaning, and it lands & deforms the snout, you will be glad you have a spare........or..........wish ya had a spare!! How do I know?? Guess!!

Ive got probably 5 hundred rounds through mine and Im trying to find one of the hex type. So I can use my original as a backup and so I wont have to pull the gun apart every time I want to change/check my VL's. Makes sense from a "not messing with the accuracy" mindset. I know torquing down everything should take everything back to where it was. BUT? ? it would be another "if" I could avoid. Just my 2cents.
