Is the factory stock off 700ml (with a good bedding job) as good as needed or would an after market stock be better to help insure accuracy in 45 cal smokeless conversion?

I'm not a fan of the tupperware stocks supplied on most factory guns, so I'd go the extra mile, eliminate the variable, and get a different stock. Any SA 700 will do, open the barrel channel up as needed. Boyds typically has a laminate for around $100, some of the classified boards will have something cheaper from time to time.

:)al has given you good advice but I've had very goodluck with the factory stock without bedding. Try it first if your not happy then make the switch.

Mine shoots great with the factory stock, but I like to tweek stuff.
I want to put one in a Bell & Carlson "Alaskan Ti" or "Alaskan II" stock, I just don't know how much work I'm looking at especially with the ramrod hole. I thought about just ordering and carrying one of Mac's "quick" rods, but I like having it in the gun. It just looks more like a muzzloader to me.

Don You can add the channel in a new stock for the ramrod. you can also cut the head off a bolt and epoxy the threads in there for the end of the ramrod to thread onto unless you want to install a piece of spring steel like most factory stocks have to hold it in place.

Actually the remington has the spring steel attached to the barrel, so that shouldn't be an issue. I am tryinr to figure out the ramrod channel, I have a drill and dremel but not much else. I don't think I can heat and burn with a Bell and Carlson, they are mostly fiberglass chop I think.

A properly bedded 700ML synthetic should shoot as well as an aftermarket. It is much stiffer than a Savage "tupperware". It takes some extra work though to get the plastic rough enough to stick to. Talking with rossman40 the other day, he suggested drilling lots of holes at weird angles for the glue to flow into to lock it in. I agree! I will probably be pillaring and bedding a couple real soon for some friends, I'll try to post some pictures.

Pics would be great. I have heard of people using drills and even routers on the plastic stocks to create Mechanical locks for the bedding.

nctta, I have a short action SPS Varminter on my .45 700ml. It's not bedded and it shoots great. It works great with the somewhat beavertail forend for offhand shots, but my favorite is definitly the SA VLS stock. Balance is awsome. And no barrel inletting necessary.
