On a recent hunt I took my buddy's Savage and I lent mine to my buddy Tim. In my packing haste I ran into a bad situation because I have CRS and forgot the loads for the borrowed gun in my truck and we drove Tim's. There already was a load in the borrowed gun so I knew I could shoot once. His load is 45 gr 5744 and 250 Shockwaves with the supplied sabot. I rummaged through the box of junk I brought with me and I did not have any 5744. I did have some vials of RL7 for my gun and went with those and only bullets I had in 250gr were XTPs so went with those as well.
Well I ended up shooting a doe with the load that was already in the borrowed gun and it went perfect. I then reloaded with the untested load to try for one more and limit my shooting distance to 60 yards or so. I figured it will hit within at least 3 inches of POI so at that distance and would be a lethal shot. When presented with a shot I had a misfire. The primer went off but did not ignite the powder charge the bullet went about 40 ft and I could hear the powder falling on the leaves. Two things I think contributed to this were looser fit than I like and also primers that were not what I like to use in the Savage. I've always shot CCIs and this had never happened with those. Only primers I could find were Remingtons. Would not have happened if I didn't forget the possibles bag with 10 pre-measured loads, primers and bullets. It cost me a doe at 55 yards and I know why.
