Went hunting this past weekend and took a new hunter who just started hunting in December and he had not yet taken a deer. Well it was a very successful weekend.
The two of us went to a WMA for a quota hunt in western KY this past weekend. Had to give it a last shot and try to get some more meat in the freezer. We ended up with 3 does and a great hunt. Was a little chilly the whole time and raining on the last day but we toughed it out. Movement was touch and go. When they weren't moving they weren't moving anywhere it seemed. Then when they decided to move seems there where shots everywhere! At one time we saw up to 20 deer in our area. Results were 120 or so hunters took 37 deer. We took 3 of those. Not a bad average.
First day we saw nothing in the morning but that's because we did no scouting whatsoever. Took the advice of one fella and went to that spot for the morning. Was a good evening spot but terrible morning spot. Was right on the edge of a 200 ac picked corn field with hardly any woods around it at all. Oh well.
The first evening we drove around and found a much better spot to try. I didn't see a deer one but Tim saw 7 does and 2 bucks. One buck was a monster 10 pt and it stayed in thick creek bottom stuff and he had no shot. It went out of sight and 5 minutes later BOOM! We figured the deer got shot but luckily the guy couldn't shoot and missed. Probably because it was so thick. Tim passed on the does waiting for the buck and because of that didn't take on the first day.
Second morning we went to a spot and found the woods dotted with orange so we bailed and went scouting from the road. Didn't see anything right away but then the deer started appearing everywhere. Places that you woudn't think to hunt too! Wide open and no cover. So we found a good woodlot with fields on both sides. I took the high side and Tim took the low side. Tim got one after about 15 min of walking and I waited a little bit before going up to him and checking out his deer. While standing there a doe started sneaking across the field in front of me at about 100 to 120 yards. I tried to stop her but she knew she was in trouble. I took aim...led a little and sent a 250 Shockwave to her and put her down. Real fun. Tim was nearly screaming over the radio he got one and I got a running deer. We were stoked.
Went back to the creek that evening and I didn't see anything at all in my spot so I relocated. I walked the creek bottom and I heard Tim shoot and he said he missed cause all the deer were looking at him and didn't even run. Oh well. They walked off before he could reload and that was the end of day 2.
Day 3 had absolutely sucked with 0 deer shot in the morning on the entire WMA. It started raining about 10 am and we headed back to pack up our stuff from the hotel and then go out for an evening hunt. I found a pinch point where we could both sit together on a hill over looking the creek and have less than 80 yard shots. The deer were early and we bumped a few going in and Tim actually had one at 40 yards and no shot because of how thick it was. Oh well. We sat anyways and waited. About 5 pm 3 does appeared directly below us at less than 60 yards. GREAT I can shoot one! We agreed on shoot on "3" so I began my count....1....2....pufffffttttttttt. Tim shot and killed his and my gun pushed the bullet out but powder didn't ignite. Oh well.
All deer were shot with Savage MLs. Tim was very impressed with the accuracy of my gun. His shots were about 120 and 60 yards. One was a heart shot and the other took out both shoulders and lungs. Both deer went about 40 yards and piled up. Load was 43gr of SR4759 and a BO in BCR. He is now saving his pennies for one of those "last run" of Savages coming out soon.
Photo is Tim with his first deer and my Savage. I didn't take photos of mine I'm bashful! haha We didn't get pics of his second because in the creek bottom where we got her it was too late for my crappy cellphone to get a good pic even though it was 30 min before dark.
