I realize the 1:22 twist is the most popular twist rate, but is there any advantage or disadvantage to a 18 or 20 twist?

are you planning on shooting something other than the norm? seems the 1-22 has been well proven as a working twist. doubt a faster twist would hurt, maybe benefit if you choose to shoot longer bullets? i went with a slightly faster twist with the intent of shooting longer bullets, if not for this i would have most certainly choose the 1-22 without hesitation

The question is.............Why mess with what works??? The 1 - 22 twist rate will stabalize and accurately shoot bullets from 175 gr. Barnes saboted to 300 gr. SST's sabot less. If you increase the twist rate from 22 to say 18, you may overspin and strip a sabot? If you are looking at mostly 250 gr. and up sabot less, then no problem with the 18 or 20. Just seems to make more sense to got with a twist rate that has been proven to work with all weight bullets Also, the faster the twist, the more torque generated! Richard

I might have another opinion Those of us that have been with this Savage thing for almost 10 years have seen a great improvement in sabots. Folks are shooting loads never dreamed of back then. Also now you have Parker making a very high BC bullet. What will happen in another few years? Will you be able to shoot 35 caliber bullets in your 45? If you think that things will get better then a modest increase in twist may not be such a bad idea. You may not want to jump all of the way to 1:14, but a 1:20 or a 1:18 won't hurt. Is it needed at this time, NO but it also won't hurt much. When I say much, that is because you may need to adjust loads and do your own load workups. dave d. used my 1:14 twist barrel and shot his normal loads without any problems so it also may not hurt at all. dougva.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Savage&action=display&thread=4489edge.
