i just got my back-up savage ML. It differs significantly from my ML II, so i was hoping someone could tell me if i actually bought an ML1 described as a ML2.
The trigger is not an accu trigger. The safety is not the teardrop design on my ML2. It is a flat square, but same spot. The sights are more standard iron sights (not the fiberoptic sights on my ML2). The ram rod has a different end on it. It is more rounded and flared compared to the straight end on my ML2.
Is this an older version ML2 or actually an ML1? If it is an ML1 should i ask for a refund? I paid basically retail ($560) for the blk stock/ blue barrel version and it is missing all accesories. When it came it just had a breechplug with seized ventliner (i took quite a bit of TLC to finally get it out), the gun itself and a bent ramrod.
The gun itself seems in fine condition (after i shined up the breechplug and replaced ventliner. I'm just not sure qualitywise how the ML1 compares to the ML2. If they are roughly equivalent i'm fine.

What does the breechplug look like? Does a standard 209 primer fit in one end, and is the ventliner a flat headed (tapered bottom) screw?
Does the breechplug have 2 slots or 4? Will a standard 209 primer fit in the bolt face like your ML-II or is the bolt face different?

The breechplug looked the same as did the ventliner. I replaced the ventliner with one of my spares and fits just fine.

Then you just have a very early ML-II. My ML-I takes modules and there is no way that you can get a 209 primer in the bolt face.

thanks for the quick response. I appreciate it. The only real difference functionally is the trigger then? I feel alot better now.

You probly have a first production run of a 10ML-II. Flat top rear receiver ring, non-fiber optic sights and if you look real close you probly also have the Savage version of the QLA. Being blued I would guess your SN would be below M010000, probly in the M007000s.
The non-fiber optic sights is a big give away. They were on the first run of both blue and stainless 10ML-II along with the QLA. On the next production run fiber optic sights were added and the QLA was dropped due to TC threatening a law suit.

If you keep it and need a set of scope bases for it I have a NIB set of Warne's (bases only) that will fit the old style receiver, if you or someone else can use them send me a PM and I give you a price.

My Sav MLs are all of that style. I like them. I "replaced" the trigger with SSS (Sharp Shooter Supply ) triggers and am very happy with the same. The new safety seems a little easier to use, it is bigger in size. Just some changes made during the run.

mine is in the 7000 and the 209 fits in the bolt face just fine. it takes the std breech plug/ventliners. i like the QLA feature but the trigger on it def leaves alot to be desired. i'm looking toward a timmy trigger.

I believe the savage trigger you have is adjustable, it is just a pre-acutrigger.

It is adjustable. Seems to me there was information on adjusting it on the old board. If adjusting the trigger caution is strongly advised.

Most of the "blued" triggers do not have the sear adjustment and when guys take a file or stone to them you get past the surface hardness. And with a metal injection molded (MIM) part once you do that you are screwed. I get CFs brought to me all the time with that problem. SS actions had the same trigger as the model 12 which had the sear adjustment.
As far as triggers, spend just a few more dollars and get the SSS's Sharp Shooter Competition Trigger. Why spend $85 for a Timmney or Rifle Basix #1 when you can spend less then$100 and get the next thing to a Jewel for your Savage (of course you will not find a Jewel for a Savage). You can increase the amount of sear for safety in the field and still have a 2lb trigger.

I think Rossman has the answer with the SSSs. He adjusted mine and they perform well. I have a Jewel on a TarHunt, not quite the same but for the money the SSS is well spent. Have someone like Rossman that knows what he is doing to adjust/install the same if you have concerns. SSS put one in for me directly, both Ross's and the SSS installed are about identical.
