I'm still shooting my .50 Savage while building my .45...I've been shooting 58 grains VV N120 with a 300 gr Barnes Original bullet. Now I may be wimpy but this seems to be a stout load when I shoot it. I'm looking to downsize to a 250gr bullet and looking for suggestions other than the 250gr Hornady XTP. Any suggestions on powder bullet combinations would be appreciated. Thx

Doc,
Some guys shoot the 250 gr shockwaves or Horn. SST's. Personally, I don't like em. Had some performance issues a while back. You might try 250 Speer Gold Dots or Deep Curl as their now called-Bonded Bullet. Two other options would be the Parker 275's or Nosler 260 gr Partitions (if you can find em--stopped makin em 2-3 mo's ago) Try Wiedeners's Supply.

I shoot the hornady FTX 250 grain, you can buy in bulk, with mmp short black sabot, 45grains of 4759 right around 2300 fps in my original savage. It is very accurate out to 200 yards. Very comfortable to shoot. Friend shoots 250 grain barnes tipped bullet with Harvester yellow crush rib, 43grains n110, about same speed.

I like Barnes 250 TMZ over a duplex H4198/IMR SC 4759. It is a boat tail bullet. I knurl the bullets. Many have found their ML with Barnes boat tail bullets exhibits poor accuracy at ranges over 100 yards or so.
My ML shoots the 458 grain bullets better than the 452s. It is acceptable with the knurled TMZ.
They tend to be spendy at over a buck a pop.

Doc, the 245gr Barnes Spitfire is also an excellent bullet. That's what I was using prior to converting to .45. If you buy the TMZ's or Spitfires in quantity, you can get the price down a bit (or could four years ago).
Although performance is exceptional, they do need to be knurled for accuracy. They list as being .451 and some will measure less than that. You need a .452 diameter for accuracy. I was using a 14gr N110/61gr H322 duplex load.

+1 Barnes. I use the 225 Barnes pistol bullet and also the the 250 and 300 MZ bullets. They have never let me down. I shoot book loads of 4759 with good power and accuracy.

If you use the same bullet with a faster powder and lower charge the recoil will be much less. 40-45 grains of AA 5744 or IMR 4759 will get you in the same fps range with a much easier shooting load. They'll also ignite easier in cold weather. I started using the 5744 this season for these reasons.
