As i set here in the deer stand with my new 10ml. i wanna ask if you think i got a batch of old, brittle sabots? They seem awful stiff (mmp short black). Anyway i just got the gun Wed and sighted in (iron sights at 50yds) while i wait on my scope to arrive. I started with book load less 10% thus 38 grain of 110 behind the above mentioned sabot and a 250 gr sst (i will be shooting no more the 75 yds till scope arrives and i can work up the correct loads. i am holding a 2-3 inch group at 50 with this and the iron sights. All loads where dipped with the lee 3.1 (37.3 gr) then on to the digital and then to the beam for the 3rd check. so i know they where 38. anyway of the 7 shots to sight it in (4 to dial it in and then 3 shots for a group) i was only able to find 2 sabots 1 with 3 prongs gone and 1 with 1 prong gone bases looked normal the petals still attached where straight out. Is this common with smokeless as i have never seen this with my BP or is it as i suspect just an old brittle batch of sabots the my powder dealer had laying on the shelf for years. Because this is a light load with virtually no recoil in my opinion.

what petals where left were fully flared at a right angle to the base. I think they just sat on the shelf forever and are dry rotted and brittle. If I knew how to post a pic I would. New batch will be rolling this way.

Just the fact that the only 2 that i could find back (1 with only 1 petal remaining and the other with 3 petals remaining) maybe i am just used to BP velocity and seeing all 4 petals attached yet and semi flared. completely green remember and only 7 shot under my belt for smokeless. Just seemed odd to me for such a light load.

IMO, missing petals is a non issue. I have more lost petals with MMP than with Harvester, but my two 50s like MMP Short Black best. BH

Cenill, It is common to have missing petals, especially with relatively high pressure powders such as N110. Missing petals is of no concern as long as you maintain accuracy.Bump that N110 up to 42 grns and you should cut those groups in half. Are you allowed to use a scope where you are located? If you are then by all means put some glass on it!

While I agree that losing petals is not an issue as long as accuracy is there, I'm surprised at you losing petals with only 38 grains of N110. One of my favorite loads is 43 grains of N110, and I sometimes lose petals, but not always. No more than sabots cost, I would try some new ones.

There could be one or two of several possibilities why your new 10MLII is not getting better groups, none of which would have anything to do with your sabots. Even if they are older, they should be ok unless they have been stored in direct sunlight or around some aromatic type cleaners. Stored in a cool, dry, dark room, they should last a long time.

When you look at the "saw tooth" pattern in a Savage bore, its no wonder that all the petals don't come off all the time! ;D As long as the base looks flared and no big gaping pieces of plastic missing, (from that flare) don't fret about the missing petals. Its the base that seals the bore. The petals just keep the bullet in alignment until it exits the barrel. After that, the petals can go wherever they want! Richard

Weighing (instead of dipping) that powder might not hurt anything either.

The 2-3 inch group was iron sights at 50. I am waiting on my scope to arrive to really hone it in which is why all I did was 38 grains didnt want to waste anymore sabots or powder. I did not try anything else. As far as dipping. I dipped, then dropped onto my digital scale, then onto my balance beam. I am overally cautious and anal that way when it comes to weighing charges. I have always been that way with rifle and pistol. But I have always been able to work up accurate loads by triple checking as I found that even 1/10 of a grain can make a diffence especially in the wildcats, etc. when you get to pushing at 4000 fps. I cant waiting get the scope and really start working on this ML 10. After just 7 shot I cant believe I didnt get one sooner as i have wanted one for a couple years. I should send Savage a Thank You letter for stopping production which caused me to force my hand and pony up!
