Years ago I read where old timers would fill their shotgun shells with wax to give a tighter slug type pattern...which I can see it helping. It made me think about a hollow point bullet's cavity being a resistance in flight. Just wondering if anyone has tried putting anything inside those cavities. I once heard someone say they used JB Weld. Not that I'm needing to change things...I'm just wondering. I'm so green to Muzzleloading that last year I bought a 40 round box of 50 cal 230 gr hollow point sabotted bullets at a flea market for $2.00... didn't own a gun...but heck.. i had the bullets...LOL. I later bought a CVA Optiima Elite and started shooting these cheap slugs... which I've since learned that they are T/C's cheap slug... but they work great because I've knocked the dog/hockey out of 5 deer with it this year. I've also tried the Horny SST 300 gr bullet which is mighty as well... and will probably try the Barnes 300 gr MZ Expanders that I have on hand...they look deadly awesome. Sorry about the rabbit trail I got off on... just wondering if anyone has tried filling hollow point cavities on cheap slugs? Thanks.....Dan

I used the 300 gr. hornady hollow point bullets with smokeless and thought I would try something similar. I had some chrome colored bb's that fit the hollow point bullet almost perfectly. Just a light tap would seat them in the hollow point. They shot about the same POI as those without the bb and same group size but they did not perform as well at 2300-2400 fps on deer. They seemed to be very explosive on impact at short range, under 40 yards.

Yes, I have gorrilla glued 24 cal orange air soft bb's(Wal-mart air soft gun section) to the front HP of XTP's and seems to increase accuracy slightly and raise POI 1-2" @ 100 on 300grners. They must increase BC some. But I probably won't use them for hunting because I think the XTP will bust brush better without the bb in front. I missed a good one to some brush with a 200 grain xtp(44 cal) this year and I will be using 300 grain XTP's from now on.

Eley 22LR subsonic hollow points will expand more when Vaseline is put in the hollow point. I use a hypodermic needle to fill after it is warmed to a liquid. Shot a crow at 122 yards with one, innards were strung out the far side! Wax would be the same effect. For deer the bullet would blow up to quick at Savage ML speeds.
Thinks for the wax thought, varmint loads, wow gonna try that!

It would seem that the big hollow points would cause wind resistance but do not worry...it does not.
When propelled at even slow speeds, that point becomes pressurized with air and the air in front of the bullet just slips on by.

I have been tipping my hunting bullets, 300 grain Remingtons, for the last 2 years. I use Elmer's fiberglass epoxy and a mold. I put them in a drill to cut off the tip and clean them up with light sand paper. They are the best shooting bullets out of my Savage stock 50 barrel. They shoot better than normal Remingtons but POI does not change very much. Here are two targets from 300 yards. They do have a nasty effect on deer as well. Here is what one did on a big doe that was a bang flop. The only reason why I use them though is that they have been more accurate out of my gun. I am careful with shot placement do to the hard tip making it more likely for bullet failure.
