Yes, I'm senile and a newbie on this board. I've got a 10ML I bought in 2001 and have hated it and might even sell it BUT. I drove 50 miles one way today to get the proper powder for it, never shot it with smokeless 'cause I'm chicken but you guys are a bad influence so I decided before I sell it I'd actually try it out with the proper powder, sabots, and some of my home brewed cast slugs. Got the powder, sabots -- even found out CCI primers might be part of the problem so got some Winchester 209's and Federal 209a's...........and as long as we drove that far to the store picked up several more pounds of powder just to make it worth the trip (at least I convinced wife that was the reason....) Get home, get out the 10ML to take the breech plug out and clean it before I shoot smokeless the first time................I cleaned it totally last year......................... .............and do you think I can find the breech plug tool? I've got three for my Knights and my 10ML tool has disappeared and I cannot find where to buy one besides the POCAMPO tool which is a bit more than I wanted to pay but will if I have to. Can't even find a valid post for that one. Anyone have any idea where I can buy one of these besides calling Savage and waiting on hold for 20 minutes because they don't offer it on the web? Many Thanks, Art

Art, your cast slugs might work just fine, but I sure wish you had bought some Hornady XTP's (250 and/or 300 grain). Bullet/sabot fit in this rifle is of utmost importance. Your powder choices are perfect to get started. I hope your cast slugs work for you, but if not, don't give up before trying some Hornady XTP's and MMP sabots.

I know Billy..............I've got some Hornady 265 grain XTP's I can use if I have to, I do a LOT of big bore (.444 .45-70 450 Marlin) cast shooting and I will try everything before I sell this IF I can find a blasted breech plug tool. After reading this forum I have concluded (or maybe *assumed*) that the bullet/sabot fit is akin to a metallic cartridge. The holy black goes "boom" all at once but smokeless needs to build up a head of steam to go "bang" which means a tight fit with the saboted bullet is ALL important with this rifle -- Please tell me if I'm wrong but I am working on trying to understand this rifle and so far have failed miserably. Frustrating for a guy who can build custom Mausers and shoot 1/2" MOA with them but I'll get over it..........<grin> OH! and MMP sabots have always been my sabot of choice. Idiots at the powder store told me the sabot/bullet combo's they had in stock "could not be beat" (powerbelt junk....) Art, you can make a tool from a 1/4" drive socket of proper dia if you have a dremel tool or a cut off wheel for a grinder...even a carefulluy used hacksaw...but by all means READ the tips and hints section FIRST!........when you get it figured out you will love it...Bill

Was just going to go there Hill, whilest screwing around downstairs I snuck a small screwdriver in to the breechplug with a light --- I never tighten them down very far when I store the gun and I got the plug to back right out. I had seen the post on making one from a 1/4" socket and need to go find it now. Thanks!!!
