Anyone have experience with using 300 gr XTP sabots with Hodgdon Mag 777? Thanks

My son shoots 250 gr XTP's out of his T/C Pro-Hunter with 110 gr's of 777 loose powder/MMP short sabot. Volume measured. This load has been sudden death for at least six deer in last three years. All shots DRT.

Good info. Started with 240 grain XTP in my T/C Impact but didn't get the accuracy I switched to 300 grain. The 300 grain seemed to be more accurate with my current powder. Shooting 2 pellet magnum 777. Thinking of going to loose BP to "tweak" it even more. Season continues tomorrow for 4 days. Hope the White tails cooperate.

I know the 300s are .452. The closer you get to actual bore dia the more accuracy you will realize.

Gave the 240's to my son, so I don't know what the diameter was but, I measured my 300's and got a .451..with sabot a .503. I have to assume the plastic sabot compresses during the load process. I have a feeling Santa will bring me some Blackhorn 209 to try out this year.

Went out today with the standard Trip 7 two pellet load (non magnum), using 300 XTP. Pink target at 50 yds and black at 100 yds. Shooting with Redfield 2-7x33 scope. Bought some T 7 powder in hopes of doing a little better, although I should be happy with this load.

She likes 100 grs Triple 7 powder. I weighed 74.7 grains so I need to convert to see what I'm throwing on volume. I feel better at 100 yds now.

BTW, in most cases, you will get a crud ring with the 777. Usually about 2-3 inches ahead of breech plus. Comes out with bronze brush & solvent (Hoppes's) though. It does shoot well & Omega's/Encore's seem to like it.

Hoppes is best for BH209 at the end of the day.

Yep, read about the crud ring early on. I noticed it on my son's rifle (he doesn't clean between shots). I've been using a 50/50 mix of Ballistol and water for my swabbing patch, seems to work well. I use Windex as a 1st step cleaning process on my military rifles with corrosive ammo. The alcohol should help dry things up faster than plain Windex. I may try that. Thanks

gmb,
We swab at range with the 50/50 windex/washer fluid too, but the crud ring is still there when we go home to clean bore properly for storage or next session.

At home i just used warm soapy water with T7. Usually Dawn dish soap. I never used Hoppes with anything besides BH209 and smokeless.
Simple Green worked too then finish off with a MIL SPEC CLP such as CENT-CLP. A gallon is about $20 and lasts for many years. Avoid CLPs with Teflon unless you clean it all out before shooting.
Teflon based products and T7 leave a nasty ring. Remoil was my main problem and i quit using it. Now i also treat mine with Montana Xtreme bore conditioner too. After about 3-5 treatments you will hardly notice the crud ring.

Too, You may want to consider trying some Remington 300 gr .458"HPs w/ MMP orange sabot or Harvester Black crushed rib sabot. I've yet to have a .451" bullet group tighter than a .458". Use loose FFFG T7 in a .50cal. It's easier to tweek the load than with the pellets that are so much more expensive. Pellets are for guys that don't like shooting ML's. Shoot loose for powder--shoot tight with sabots. Shoot often.

The Trip 7 loose powder is working very well in ol' "Betsy" (last photo)...just ordered some crushed sabots and Speer .458 JHP. Remingtons must be in high demand since just about everyone's out of them. I'm running out of room to store all my BP stuff..need larger case/range box..
