Thanks dave d, I love midsouthshooters because I can pick it up in person, I work in Clarksville, which is where they are, no waiting for shipping, etc. And I can get powder, etc without crazy hazmat shipping.
So you are ordering bullet sabot combo, but then using a different sabot? Can you not order those Hornady's without the sabots, like in the 100 count box like the .250 xtp's?
The .250 xtps for my .50 are actually pistol bullets....what are these? they rifle or pistol?
The .50 cal's are .452", what are these?
Also, on the Barnes, I thought I had read I was supposed to use a flat-base that could only be ordered direct from Barnes?
Just trying to figure it all out. Thanks. John

Howa are you talking about bullets for the .45 or .50? I'm looking for the bullet/sabot for the .45, just comparing it to the .50 which I am more familiar with. I can get xtps for the .50 for $20 for 100, but seems like bullets for the .45 are close to $1 each, that would get expensive at the range.

Now they have a 10 mm(.400) 200 gr. hp-xtp at midsouth that is a handgun bullet like the .452 xtp i shoot in my .50. Will these not perform in the .45? Are they moving too fast out of the .45? I am not arguing with you guys at all, just looking for answers, thanks for helping me out.

John.............You cannot get the SST without the sabots...Period! They just will not sell them. I talked with Steve Hornady at the NRA convention this past years and the reason is this: They do not sell Pistol ammunition loaded with the .40 SST. Therefore, they do not sell the reloading components for them. When they sell them with sabots, their intention is that they be used with muzzle loaders. It eliminates any liability since they are not intending them to be used in .40 ammunition. Hence they are sold as muzzle loader bullet/sabots. So just get those .40 XTP's for range use and then fine tune with a few SST for hunting. Don't forget, Mid-South has those .40 XTP blems for $12.95/100. A great buy and good shooters! Richard

How about the 180 gr version of the xtp in .400mm? What is the reason everybody stops at the 200 gr, why not drop on down to 180 gr?

Great thread. I too want to take the plunge and go .45 smokeless for all the reasons of the original post, however, I want to start with a Rem 700ML. Is Pac-nor a good source and are they familiar supplying a barrel for the Rem. Also, I'm a bit confused as to the required bolt conversion/breech plug issue. Is there a one stop source for the required bolt conversion/breech plug. I'd want a set-up that all I'd need to use is a 209 primer and not some sort of cartridge case adapter. The stock work I want to do myself. Thanks fellas

John.............We have tried the 180's and they do work. What happens is this: as the bullet gets lighter in weight, the bearing surface gets shorter and can relate to less stability. Sometimes you find they shoot great at 100 yards but accuracy falls of at longer distances. These are things you just have to try for yourself and see what works for you out of your barrel. Actually, this is what keeps me interested in all the shooting I do with the .45. Trying new "stuff!" ;D John...............all I now bring to the range is the Blue Smooth "Easy load" Harvesters for all my saboted shooting. Between Herman and I, we have give away over 800 of those Tan MMP's since they just do not shoot as well as the Harvesters. The Blue crush ribs do shoot! Just not as well as the plain ones Richard
