I shot the Pedersoli yesterday with some shells the guy I got it from loaded. I pulled a bullet an found 28 gr. of what looked like 5744. But I can't be sure. The load manual says that would be a acceptable load for a trapdoor Springfield. I had some different combinations I had but together. The first thing I noticed is it's been a long time since I shot open sights at any distance. And that glasses that tint in the sun aren't conducive to good shooting. But for the first time out and just getting to know each other I thought things went OK I shot a few group that I would have been proud of with a scoped rifle. And a few that left me scratching my head. But all in all it's a very nice rifle I just need to get the other front globe sight inserts and the instructions for the creedmore style tang sight. And maybe some new glasses . Can't wait to stretch it out a little further. All I want to do with this rifle is shoot paper and steel. No completion just have fun. Warren

If you keep the loads to trapdoor levels (300gr bullet at around 1500fps) they are fun to shoot. At that level you can shoot cast bullets so it makes a somewhat cheap plinker. With my grandson he is fascinated with older guns and would rather shoot a rolling block then a AR (at least for now). If you get the kids involved by teaching a little history and then take them to the loading bench and then to the shooting bench it is a pretty good learning experience. My grandson is home schooled so we try to make everything learning and he is now able to research on the internet. I made the mistake of telling him about the buffalo hunters and Billy Dixon so now he is bugging me to get a big Sharps.
I do not know how far you can push some of the Italian repros. I doubt if I would trust them with the heavier loads. Even with modern materials your still limited by the design. Somewhere I read you can push the Sharps to just about 30K psi chamber pressure (that would be a 300gr jacketed bullet about 2000fps depending on powder), a trapdoor has less then a 20K limit and the newer heavy actions like the Ruger #1 can be pushed at 40K. My neighbor is big into 45-70s and he will push a 300gr around 2400fps in his heavy actions.

I've been shooting the 405 gr cast and 405 Remington jacketed. Been staying on the bottom side of the trapdoor loads and they backup enough for me. I'll try the 300 gr. I shoot the Remington's in my Savage. Thanks for the advice rossman. To cold to shoot now. Been looking at Marlin 1894 38 357 lever guns now. I'd like the find the cowboy model with the octagon barrel. Warren

Look for a 1892, again some of the Italian companies like Uberti are catering to the cowboy shooters. The 92' is lighter, better trigger and has a shorter stroke then a 94'.
