I have both powders and im just curious if anyone has tried 5744 as the booster for Reloader 7. Mainly with sub 300gr bullets in a Savage 50cal.
I know Reloader 7 is pretty good but it does make fairly low pressure with bullets under 300grs. Would this duplex help or is it a waste of time with lighter bullets?
Also what do you think would be a good starting load of Reloader 7 using the .458 325gr FTX. My bore is pretty tight and it appears the MMP Orange fits just about right in mine. The Black Crushrib is really tight.

I'd start with 59 or 60 grs of Rx7and go up from there. You shouldn't need a duplex with a 325gr bullet. I use SR4759 for my duplex booster loads with 10x. It seems to not torch the vent liners like AA5744 does. Most duplex shooters use VV N-110. I'd use that if you can get it. It's not to be had in my neck of the woods. Read RB's theories on duplexing under the Tips and Hints section. He lays it all out why they are necessary for the light bullets.

Sorry, I gave you bum info. RB's duplex post is actually under the loads section.

Thank you for the response.
I wasn't planning on trying a duplex with the 325gr, only some 200-250gr .452 bullets. Ive got a bunch of 200-225gr .452 FTX bullets i use just for target shooting and fun.
The 200-250gr bullets are probably too light with Reloader 7 unless i use a pretty heavy load which i would prefer to avoid.
The 325gr FTX i would like to push to about 2200-2300fps if possible with only Reloader7.
BTW ive tried the search function without any luck. Do you have the link to the Re7 traces? I thought i saw some but i cant find them now. Any sabotless data would be helpful too with Re7. I have a bunch of 50cal 300gr FTX and Rem 50-385gr bullets i use in 54x50 sabots so it would be nice if i could use them sabotless in the Savage also.

I am shoting 62 grains of RL7 with the 325grain ftx @ 2250 fps. In pm's with RB he recommended not going below 60 grains. 2300fps in a 325grain bullet is plenty of recoil for me.

GMB I am shooting 62 grains of RL7 with the 325grain ftx @ 2250 fps. In pm's with RB he recommended not going below 60 grains. 2300fps in a 325grain bullet is plenty of recoil for me. That is plenty for me too. I just want to stay in the usable "pressure window" without excessive recoil. I found the traces for 300gr and it appears a 325gr should work pretty well with similar charges....maybe even slightly better with the starting load data. Savage used to recommend Reloader7. Its kind of sad they quit. It seems like a very good choice for heavier bullets and it has a very reasonable pressure curve. Thank you for your response, it backs up my research perfectly. I just wanted to be sure with results from people using it now.

I've had good luck with 300 gr BOs on top of a duplex load. 10/55 n-110 or 5744/Re-7. The N-110 give a little more speed, but not enough to let speed be the deciding factor. Bullet hole pix are on the Trophy section. BH

I am shooting R7 in my latest converted Rem 700ML. I am loading 52 grains of R7 under a HSB that holds either My 333 gr. LBT LFN or my 288. gr BRP mold FN ( Both are cast of water dropped Wheel Weights). My crony indicates 1950 FPS +-. with either boolit. Makes me happy!
