With 64 grs of H4198 the bullet penetrated 4 1/2 inches, more important I only recovered the jacket it wieghted 65.5 grs. IMHO I would not use this bullet on a large animal, the 300gr Barnes X bullet hit a 8 inches and loses zero weight and forms a picture book mushroom. As for Mr. Griz or Mr. Brownie, and many, many have been taken with flink lock rifles, don't use it, unless you can run like the wind.

I am one of the 200SW/SST's biggest fans but I agree with you that I would not use it on a large animal. It is an excellent deer bullet...but when I was developing a load for elk I immediately started working up another bullet in my gun.
As for blocks of wood, I think they are directionally informative but potentially misleading. The only similar test I have done was firing self-defense loads out of my Glock 23 into a block of wood. they too shed their jackets and came apart, with no more than 1 or 1.5 inches of penetration. Later that year I shot a deer with my ML at point blank range, who had enough strength to try and get back up, so I immediately pulled my Glock and put two through his chest with the exact same loads. While the damage was modest enough to underscore why pistols are only a good option when a rifle/shotgun is not handy, both rounds opened up and passed all the way through.
Modified to add: I've only ever seen them sold as Shockwaves with yellow tips, are they now actually selling as the SST with red tips?

Spaniel,
I don't mean blocks of wood in the actual sense. What I do, is the bind magazines and catalogs, each strapped tight than strapped together till I have a 30 to 35 pound block, Bob Parker referred to it as equal to a block of wood. I can see that the 200 SST would be a great Deer size animal killer, in the center of the 4 1/2 inches it made a one inch size hole. Tar, Has offered to send me 195 Barnes all cooper bullets, I'm sure they will do much better, I only use all cooper bullets in my hunting, however, Smoke sent me some Nosler Partitions, I would not hasitate to use them on any game. :)Andy they have sold red tip ssts as long as I have been shooting them. Interesting, I located them on Midway just now. I have never, ever seen them stocked in a store anywhere as anything but the yellow-tipped Shockwave.

trust me Andy they've been around a long time. I see reviews from 2005 on there so I'm not doubting you. Typically have just bought in a store while there, I believe when they first came out they were Shockwave only and I never bothered to check online again as I had a Cabelas down the road where I bought then. I'm going to have to start ordering online though, the price difference is between SST and Shockwave is huge.

I've also saw some 250 gr. SW's. They were bonded and had a purple tip. Wish they would make those in the 200 gr.

I've also saw some 250 gr. SW's. They were bonded and had a purple tip. Wish they would make those in the 200 gr. I am really nervous about bonded ML bullets on whitetails. The pic below was a 300gr bonded SW, you can see the pencil hole with practically no surrounding trauma damage through the lungs. This was developed as my elk load, but since the gun was sighted in with it I used it on a deer, and will not do so again as it clearly did not open at all. 45 caliber hole in and out. One bullet will not do everything perfectly. I like the 200 SW/SST on deer, I think it is appropriately soft except at close range at high velocities. But I would not use it on elk/bear. Just like I think the 300gr bonded bullet would be good on those larger animals but is too hard for a non-bone shot on deer.

I don't use Barnes 290gr FM TMX with sabots in my .50, but in my .45 sabotless it will come close to an all around bullet, I haven't use it on Deer sized animals, but I'm reasinably sure it would work well
