Chivesy. I seriously thought about a brake but it can make you unpopular at the range. Let me know how it works out for you? Jon I hear that...or at least ive heard it from people after shooting my ported 45/70 Guide Gun. Its insanely loud in the range booths. The rumor is that Marlin stopped making them with ported barrels because they were so loud.

I go to the local range here at Fort Benning and they have covered and uncovered tables. I always shoot at the uncovered tables sites. I wear a pair of Walker Quad Game ear muffs and don't have a problem with the noise. Plus I can hear everything that is said among shooters that are on the line. I did hear a few fellows at the end of the table line state "there goes that hand cannon". I looked down their way and noticed they weren't wearing any hearing protection at all. First thing, that's against range rules and I kindly suggested that they put in or put on their hearing protection. They did so and I never heard another remark from them for the rest of the day.
I've been shooting a knurled 200 gr. SST sabotless and a load of 62 gr. of Benchmark @ 2622fps as stated in the Load Data section on this site. I have to apologize for not saving my targets so that I could share the groups with you guys. To tell you the truth I wasn't real happy with my results at 200 yds. My 100 yds were with-in moa but my 200 yd. groups were about 5". So I decided to grab my stuff and head home. No pictures. This was my first range session with the Remington and I knew with more time I could do better.
I did shoot a large doe at 75yds. here in Ga. and she went down about 50 yds from the shot on Thanksgiving Day. I have always shot deer in the lungs, maybe because that's what I've been used to after 15 years of bow hunting.
Then last week I traveled to Ohio for gun season. On Sun. I set up a target to make sure I was still on and I was on at 100 yds. So I moved back to 200 yds. and shot a group at 2". I was with a friend of mine that I grew up with there in Ohio and he was shooting a 12ga. slug gun. He also sited it in at the same time that I was. His 12 ga. was LOUDER than my Remington and yes I had the brake on. So really I don't think that this rifle is overly loud with the brake on. I was happy with my 2" group at 200 yds. (3 @ 2.5") for the moment and off to the woods we went.
Wed eve. I ranged 3 does at 185 yds. so I decided to take a shot at one of the largest does. The bullet hit right where I was aiming, another lung shot right behind the shoulder. It was a complete pass through. The bullet broke ribs going in and shreeded the arteries at the rear of the heart, then exited through the ribs cage as it broke a few more. I didn't recover any of the bullet. This deer ran about 80 yds right towards me and fell over. ;D
One thing that I really like is the recoil of this rifle. To be honest my AR 15 (.223) has more recoil. After hearing my friends 12 ga. and comparing the sound to my Remington I decided not to wear any hearing protection during my hunt. When I shot that doe at 185 yds the sound of the shot never fazed me one bit. YES I love my muzzle brake and no I don't think it is all that loud.

Great job. Thanks for the range/hunting reports. 2" at 200 yards is good enough for me.

Shivesy, who did the brake on your rig? I am contemplating something similar in the near future and was wondering if you were happy thus far......how much does it weigh? I want to build a lighter rig for my son to use and i really like the 700s; yours included......Bill

The brake came with the barrel and Pac-nor did the barrel. When the brake is screwed on the seam is 100%. You or I could not tell that the brake is removable. I measured the weight of the rifle on the bathroom scales and I think it was 12 lbs. I guess you could have the barrel fluted and shave off some weight or maybe a different barrel contour.

Try some H-4895. If I was going to shoot a single, I'd start there.
Varget would be my next step.
