There are 3 Savages is camp this year. Loads being used are all different: One thing is similar...H4198. One guy that used a Savage for 5 years converted to a TC Encore last year. Using BH209 and 325 FTX's he's getting around 2200 fps and his groups have been amazing all fall. Under MOA out to 200 and almost as flat as the savages. He never found the consistency with his savage.
My gun will be shooting 70 gr H4198 and the 325 FTX in a Harv CR The two other guns are using 68 gr of H4198. One shoots the 300 SST and the other 300 Barnes MZ's Both using HPH12's.
Everyone is pretty lethal with lots of shooting done over the past few weekends. Camp has come to life. With about 10 guys in camp, I think only 2 are using a slug gun. Everyone else has a mL of some sort
Tomorrow is the day and I plan on sitting until I score or until dark. Pack slamwiches, apples and fluids. There are lots of very good bucks around this year and as much as I'd love to kill a 140+ 8 point we've seen during bow, I'd also like to retain my one and only buck tag for a few weekends to keep me hungry. There are also 2 very big bucks that would push 150 if they hadn't smashed there racks up and busted some G2's & G3's off. Believe it or not, we will try, try, try not to shoot one of these guys. Next year they would be hogs. We'll see how that works out. Sometimes you just don't have time to fully analyze horns during gun. With the bow it's easier cause they have to get so close. Catching a glimpse of a large buck through the woods at 100 yds and having 1 lane to send a bullet and no time to think may be the end for one of these guys.
Good luck to the NY'ers tomorrow and all season

Wilms: We started QDM in 99, once you start letting them go by you will find lots of time to look them over, and you will see all the shot opportunities. What we have found is when you are focused on just shooting a buck, you focus on the first shooting opportunity, because of the shot you never see the rest of the story. Let them walk by, and see how many shot opportunities you actual had.
I believe the first time you let one walk by it is hard to do, but then you will see how much you are missing.
This is important for all to do, not 9 out of 10 hunters, if you decide to do so it has to be all or nothing.
Good luck, I will be on stand tomorrow also.

Wilms, first day tomorrow, here near Binghamton also. I am curious- is your area shotgun/ml only, or do you guys just prefer to use ml'ers? Also, yours is the third report here in N.Y., in the last week, of trophy bucks with broken tines, kindof weird! I saw a vicous deer fight Sunday from my stand. Now, the FTX bullet, can you tell us exactly what that is, for those of us who lack some of this type of knowledge? Thanks, Pete

I was introduced as the Hornady Leverevalution to be used in rifles with tubular magazines so the kick of the rifle did not cause the bullets in the mag to go off. It is a pointed rubber tip. The 160 gr shoots great in my mod 94 30/30. Someone correct me if I am wrong Rusty

Good luck on the opener. We have been doing the qdm thing and wow it is really making a diff. Last Monday on Michigan's opener I passed on some really nice deer. Some I just thought to my self afterwords am I crazy? But on the other hand we have a 160pt class deer poking around and everyone is waiting to get a shot, which is a different paradyme. Now every year a few people in our section get 130 and 140 class bucks. In the old days a nice 6 pt or small 8pt was a big deal.
Those loads all sound great and would obviously thump those deer, but dam the recoil on those have to be noticiable. Do you guys put boxing gloves on and pound the hell out of each other for fun at camp also? ;D

In NY State I have 2 DMUs (DMU can be used for either sex) plus a buck tag, for the regular season, For ML season I also have 1 either sex tag and one antler less tag. Any unfilled tag can be used in the ML season. Not to mention DMAPs.

As far as I know there are NO either sex tags in any unit in NYS for the regular season. I have 1 9H antlerless tag that will serve as my tag to keep me legal in the woods all year if I don't use it...which I won't till the very end. We can have up to 2 of these tags transferred from someone else added to our licence. As for buck...you can shoot an either sex in bow or ML season and one buck in gun. Screwbolts, I am well aware and seasoned in passing bucks. When a real slammer missing a big G2 is around, you know it's a slammer but without a thorough interrogation it's not always easy to pick that out. You see frame and mass and tine length and it's easy to go on auto pilot with a split second to make a decision. I will do my best. Right now the adrenaline is beginning to surge knowing that we "go live" in about 11 hours. I made a mistake...we have 4 Savages in camp. The other one is shooting my load and is being used by one of the "kids" friends. 4 other linelines and 2 shotguns. We are not in a rifle zone so ML's/shotguns only. When you're one with the gun, the ML is a logical choice. If your a surgeon, you'd rather have one sharp knife then 5 dull ones.

In NY: DMUs are deer management units. DMPs are antlerless deer management permits (that's what screwbolts meant). They cannot be used on antlered bucks but may be used on button buck fawns. Many of our button bucks are actually larger than some yearling does, so you have to be careful (mistakes taste good). If you have an archery license you get an either sex special season tag that can only be used in the early or late bow season. Same for a muzzle loader license.
If you have both a muzzleloader and archery license, you get one either sex tag and one antlerless tag that may be used in any of the special seasons with any legal implement (e.g. you could fill both of your special season tags with the bow or the muzzleloader if you wanted to).
The DMPs can be used in any of the seasons with any of the implements that are legal to hunt with during their respective seasons. Generally, you can apply for 2 DMPs and they do not have to be in same DMU. You can also have another hunter(s) sign over two additional DMPs to you.
For the regular firearms season you get an additional buck tag so the overall limit is 2 bucks for each hunter so long as one is killed during one of the special seasons. Any implement legal during any of the seasons may be used in the regular season.
You can hunt in the "northern" zone (and in the Catskills) with a centerfire rifle. Much of the "southern" zone is shotgun/muzzleloader country although there has been a recent movement for some of the less populated counties of the southern zone to go to rifle. Wilm's county (Wyoming County)almost went this year but it got hung up in the legislature. I need to come up for breath.
Good luck NYers!

Sorry for the late reply, didn't read this thread in a while, DB caught my mistake and did a great job of correcting it. He explained the either sex well, button bucks/ Antler less. DB also gave a great over view of the tags/ options.
From NYS DEC web site:
" Deer Management Permits (DMPs)
Hunters possessing a Deer Management Permit (DMP) may take one antlerless deer per permit, in addition to deer that may be taken with a regular big game tag or Bow/Muzz Antlerless or Bow/Muzz Either Sex tags.
* DMPs may only be used for antlerless deer (have no antlers or antlers less than 3" long). * DMPs may only be used in the WMU for which they are issued."
Another option we have in NYS is that we can have up to 2 DMPs given to use to use from other hunters. there is a place on our record tabs to enter the additional DMPs numbers.
Great Job DB.
There are also DMAPs available for Farmers/large land owners that have a substantial amount of Deer damage to their crops, these are Deer Management Assistance Permits. We use these for antlerless also after DMPs are used up.
Cortland co. nearly adopted the CF rule also but it didn't pass. It would not have changed my choice of Smokeless rifles.
