.45 cal. Played with a few different duplexes today and had one with possibilities! My pointed 200 gr. XTP with the smooth blue Harvester sabot on top of a 10/62 duplex: N-110/Re-7. At 200 yards it put all five shots in 2.7"..............The first shot being the one that made the group that large. Shots 2,3 & 4 were in .885" with shot #5 opening it up to only 1.3". But, this load was very consistent velocity wise. 2893 fps average for the five shots with an Extreme Spread on only 13 fps. The wind was acting up a bit today and could easily have accounted for that first shot? I re-fired the same load only using the 200 SST? The first three went in 1.9" with five opening up to 3.9". Here the average velocity was 2888 with an ES of 31 fps. Amazing how well that 200 gr. XTP pistol bullet shoots. Also shot the old bulged 23" barrel with 62 gr. of H4198 and it spit the first three in .506" and five opened it up to 1.3" Average velocity was 2586 fps (at 100 yards) Richard

Thanks. Again, I ask what you'd try with VV-110/133 with 25" barrel shooting the 200SST and for 195B. Thanks, Steve

Steve...........I have only played with this combination once with the new 26" barrel. I found it too slow in the 23" PN to get the speed I was looking for. As you can tell from my recent posts, I am re-thinking the speed thing. I am actually going to drop the main charge of 58 g. Re-7 listed in this post to probably 56 gr. to get me in the middle to lower 2800 fps range.........comensurate with good accuracy. On 9/28/10 I shot three groups..........One at 100 and two at 300 with the following load: 17/56---N-110/N-133. At 100 yards with the 200 gr. SST it averaged 2938 fps with an ES of 51. Four shots in .896" with five making it 1.8" The same combination at 300 produced 2925 fps average with 23 fps ES. Five shots in 3.5" Again at 300 but using the 200 gr. XTP the average velocity was 2904 with a 21 fps ES. Three shots in 2.6" Since I am looking at lower velocities now, I will probably re-visit that load slightly revised. (And yes, I know you have about four #8 jugs of that stuff left from your PPC benchrest cartridge and are looking to burn it up ;D) By the way, just for comparison, that same 17/56 ..........but....N-110/N-130 gave me similar velocities (low 2900's) in the 23" PN. Good luck Richard

I do think that it will work well in the 40 cal. I wish a hi coef 40 cal bullet existed that could be used short/long range. When you shoot the 195B, what sabot do you use?(open question to all) Steve

Richard, just curious as to the quest for lower velocities? As a longer range hunter I want the fastest load that delivers acceptable accuracy.
edge.
OK, I think I remember that you had gas cutting to your bolthead...was that the only reason?

Steve: All I am shooting are the Harvester "E-Z" load smooth blue sabots. Edge............Yeah......sort of The thing is, I am putting so many shots thru the Savage that I'm figuring....why abuse it? Along with the fact I am presently not doing any hunting. Believe me, if I come up with the right place to go (gotta find a place close to home - maybe with in an hours drive) and it has the possibilities for long range shots, I will be stoking it up. Now that I have a folder full of good accurate high speed loads, its simple to just re-sight in with one of them and go hunt. In the mean time I can play around with the lower velocity/less pressure loads and see if I can nail down some super "one holers"! Having hunted across this great USA and taken most lower 48 big game species, I no longer feel pressed to hunt to fill my freezer Just me and the wife, and while she eats any game animals, there is other "fare" she prefers! ;D But again, if I am hunting?...........If want fast and flat!
