OK. I think my Chrono is not working properly... I am averaging only about 2250 fps with 70gns of RL7, Federal 209a primer, Black Crush Rib Sabot, and 300 gn Barnes Original. Does that sound right? I am shooting original blued barrel and stock plug.
Temp was mid 30's and calm winds, chrono was about 10-12 ft from muzzle.
Thanks!
Robbie

I would have expected near 2400 fps. Try near dark and see if the muzzle flash is excessive, it probably is.
Is it accurate?
Have you tried 60grains of N120 over the chrono?

If the flash is excessive... does that mean powder is not being consumed in the barrel?
Yes, it is accurate. I took a 180 yd buck with it 2 years ago.
No N120.

"If muzzle flash is excessive". Does that mean you are not burning all of your powder? Poor sabot seal? Just asking.

I am using a ProChrono Digital. I was shooting 2 other ML's this morning as well. Whites... 50 cal. One averaged 1950 fps with a Rem .458 300 gn, orange MMP and 100 gns by weight of T7 2f (equals about 125 gns by volume), the other averaged 2150 fps with a TC 250 gn Shockwave, supplied sabot, and 100 gns by weight of T7 2f.
I don't get it... I have thought for years that my Chrono might be off as my Savage just never got the speed that others seemed to get. I have only used 3 powders, IMR4198, RL7, and a book powder IMR4?57... can't remember just now. They all shot slower fps than what others got...
But then I look at the speeds the other 2 got this morning...

IMO, excessive muzzle flash would indicate that a lot of powder was not burning. There is always some muzzle flash, take a shotgun with you and compare.

With 65gr Rel 7 & a 300 Rem, avg 2225fps. Others have reported close to 2300fps+ with the same load.

It might be a good idea to send the chrono back to the mfg. Perhaps they could test for accuracy? Boarhog

I have shot Re-#7 for a couple years now I shoot 65.o grains with a sub based saboted 250 grain precision bullet I can truthfully say I have seen no excessive flash. I was shooting 68 grain of Re-#7 and felt it was too hot so I backed off the 65.0 grains. This re-#7 was a suggestion from RB and I never looked back. It's accurate does the job on deer. Lou

Robbie... I've got the same chrono as you ..."Pro Chrono Digital". In my .50 with 67gn RL7 / 300gn BO / BCR I'm getting 2350 fps. It always shoots about 50fps slower than the same amount of H4198. Zen

I am kind of new at this but if flat land hunter has a slightly looser barrel than others, would there be less pressure which would result in slower fps and also may cause the powder to burn slower causing the muzzle flash???
