I am entertaining the idea of a replacing my barrel after the season is over with. Does anyone have a thread going on a step by step guide to swapping the barrels? Just curious

It does on exactly as if you were just taking your barrel off and putting it back on. The only tool you need is a Savage barrel nut wrench. Loosen the barrel nut. Unscrew the barrel. Swap the breech plug, nut, and recoil lug to the new barrel. Thread on the new barrel, nut and recoil lug (be sure the locating pin on the recoil lug engages the slot in the receiver). Then proceed setting the headspace as instructed in the rifle building tips (I think you asked about headspacing a week or so ago). If you have any questions on headspacing, ask away!

You'll need an action vice or a set of oak blocks with IIRC a 1" dia hole drilled through them to use a regular bench vice to hold the barrel. The barrel nuts are TIGHT so you'll want to add talc or rosin to the wood blocks to help get some bite on the barrel. If you dont have a barrel nut wrench don't buy one. I've got one you can borrow.

Step by step, Thanks Here's the link for barrel replacing, headspacing, etc., given to us by SW: dougsmessageboards.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=build&action=display&thread=66There was also a thread where several photos showed how to replace a barrel with bolted wooden blocks instead of a barrel vise. I also used that method, but forget who to thank for that.

RBinAR had a post some time ago with several pictures showing his barrel replacement procedure. It may have been on the old board. I remember it because some joked about his golf clubs sitting in the corner of his shot in one of the pics.

If I were installing a new barrel, I'd prepare the BP as described in the "head spacing" post, then install the BP in the barrel, place a new 209 primer in the bolt, screw the barrel on until you feel resistance, back off a "tiny bit(1-2 degrees, ie almost none), and tighten the barrel nut. Then mark the 209 primer and make sure it is fully seating. Re-adjust if necessary. I am not sure that the backing off the 1-2 degrees is needed or desirable. I think Richard has posted something on this. I do know that blow-back is non-existent on the rifles(5) that I've done this vs the std Sav set-up which has the primer wedged in and 1/2 unsupported.
