OK I understand now!!! Does the primer set right against the hole in the Breach plug?

The case flash hole is flush ( and headspaced ) with the hole in the breechplug.
I think that the flash hole is about 0.070 and the hole in the BP is about 0.10 for about 5/8 of an inch then 0.031 carbide bushing which then goes into a 1/4 inch diameter recess.

And the completed rifle: Yep, same cheap scope that I put on every rifle for its first few shots 6 - 24 tasco cheapie. 24x lets me see my shots without a spotting scope. With the adj. Obj. it makes bore sighting at 25 yards easier too! If it passes the test it gets a better scope. edge.

Edge, I know the most of us who have 40s have never looked back. My 40 is the easiest MLer to shoot consistently and accurately I've ever had. All loads have worked well. Fast twist doesn't hurt. Some day I'll try and see if it'll shoot single powder loads also. Good luck/skill with yours. SW

NICE! Did you have to open up the barrel channel of the forearm? It's a little difficult to tell in the photo......is the end of the BP even with the end of the barrel? P.S. Does that pad say, "Uh Oh Five Off 50"?

Which barrel contour?

Post by edge on Nov 21, 2010 8:41:39 GMT -5
I doubt that I will shoot this weekend.
The BP sits 0.090 proud.
The barrel channel needed a lot of material removed...and it still is not 100% floated.
I believe that the contour is the standard Savage contour.

Edge, Again Very, very nice But you failed to give my credit for all the highly technical advice I gave you, remember when I said you needed a barrel, a stock and trigger....or maybe that was someone else

What material is the BP made from? Do you make your carbide bushings or order them? Nice looking gun, it should be a shooter.

The BP was an alloy steel set screw of Rc45 minimum. I normally make them from 4140 and heat treat to 40Rc max...but this was convenient even though a bit a bit harder than I prefer. The vent bushing was something that I've had for a while looking for a home edge.

edge, is that bushing press fit or you have some way of securing it in the BP?

The bushing ( Purple ) is a slip fit, 0.188 diameter in a 0.190 hole. The RED section behind it is also a slip fit piece of steel tubing 0.188 OD and about 0.10 ID. That is held in by green locktite and ground flush with the end of the BP. I have cycled the 45 ACP brass and fired primers with no issues. The ejector is still in place and I may leave it there but not sure. I have the spring out of the magazine and the cases fall into the empty magazine....I may or may not change this. edge. I changed the picture to show the 45 ACP and Barrel / BP relationship.

A threaded plug I would think would hold better than green locktite. Just so it does not blow out and change the head space. Looks like any long or short action rife is fare game to become a ML now. I know where I can get a 30-06 Mossberg ATR that might make a good 45 or 40. Gun show shot out guns will have a new life as we need new MLers. Some great info on here for sure!

A threaded plug I would think would hold better than green locktite. SNIP. Perhaps, but where can it go The case ID is flush with the end of the BP. In reality I see no need for anything...If it would not fall out then the pressure would actually ensure a "perfect headspace" with a not quite perfect case! If it would not fall out then you could leave the headspace a couple of thousandths loose and the tube would most likely be forced back against the case. If the next case were larger then it would simply slide it forward. In actuality, the space would fill with crud after a few shots and it will lock in place on its own....IMO. edge. PS I chose Marlin because it was cheaper than a Savage and has the same barrel threads a nut, but I suppose that PacNor can add the breechplug to any barrel...but you may want to check with them.

Edge what did you have to pay for you XL7 was it new or used? And did it use the same wrench as a Savage? Nice looking gun anyway I hope it shoots as good as it looks. You should put it in the tips and hint that the XL7 are the same barrel threads as the Savage.

I paid $345 out the door including our Soviet style State Police check and confiscatory sales taxes ;D I have seen them go for $259 on sale within the last year or so on Gunbroker.net Then your need shipping and a transfer FFL. The best I have seen recently is $290 New and $250 used. I called one of the transfer brokers and they basically matched what I would have paid in an auction.
Mine is actually a XS7 ( the S for short action L for long action ) since I went with a 7mm-08.
Barrel nut appears to be interchangeable. The ONLY reason that I don't say they are identical is that with machining tolerances they could be different, but the barrel pitch and diameter work.

Edge, so what are you going to do with the 7mm-08 barrel? Any plans for it? It depends on whether I have a use for the .40 ML after the project is complete If I keep it as a .40 then I'd probably sell it along with the 30-06 barrel from the Savage. edge.

Got the XS7 yesterday, and picked up the box. It sure seemed light. Then examined the receiver. Sure seemed awful thin in metal thickness compared to the massive 10MLII. Then compared it to my model 12's. Still seems awful thin. Small wonder they are not making them for magnum "thumper" rounds. Sure glad the breech plug will be taking most of the "whack"! That will take away much of the force on the action. The receiver, however, will probably flex much more.

My barrel should be here within two weeks.
I just may have shooting results before edge does. ;D ;D ;D
But then, mine is a .45 barrel and don't have to worry about shooting sabotless or making my own sabots. (Just to be fair.)
