I apologize as I know this has been covered before, but I could not find it in tips or hints or by searching.
I have a used breech plug I bought a while back from another forum member. It came with a drill bit that IIRC is a "C". Drill bit measures .2415 - .2420 and is labeled 242CO It appears the primer pocket has been drilled out with the bit to slightly enlarge it. The drill bit will not fit in the primer pocket of my three stock (but used) breech plugs. The winchester primers I use still are a snug fit in the pocket that was drilled out.
Whats the theory or thinking on drilling out the primer pocket to a slightly larger size? Is it done to resolve a problem, or to just slightly enlarge the pocket for ease of inserting primer? Or should the pocket on my other plugs be that size, and I need to use the "C" drill to clean out my other breech plugs? (they don't look like they need cleaning, it looks like I would be removing a little metal). I have not had any problem loading primers, and I have beveled the entrance to my primer pockets.
thanks for you help. Gary

My reason for using the "C" bit was so that I could use Federal primers. Win 209's worked fine beforehand but Federals would not go into the pocket without some enlargement.

What Dave W. said, some times Fed or CCI 209 M primers are a bit larger than Win and guys enlarged the pockets for that reason. Mike

I just received 3 of the new hex head breech plugs from Savage and a Win 209 will only go about 1/3 way in on all three. They seem to be tighter than the old style, so I've ordered a "C" bit to open them up.

Mine came with the 3/8 head ,winchester just start ,fed,s don,t and neither do the cci mag. So i also ordered a size C from fastenal. There is shoulder on the inside of the plug so I'm going to drill only to the shoulder.gunny

The winchesters have a stepped design for ease of loading into shot shells. One reason I dont use them. The second reason is I have had them bulge the head just from firing the primer alone.Third reason is if your head spacing is off they can and will rupture out the side of the primer.Ask Deadon about this one!The feds are the most uniform size wise and I have never had a distortion issue with them. Others mileage will vary of course! ;D
