Well, I got 400 of those Hornady 200 gr. XTP blems shipped to me this past week and gave them a try today. Good weather, 45 to 60 degrees with only a little wind.
Started off trying an idea I had to help eliminate curved base bullets (SST's and 195 Barnes in particular) from blowing thru the sabots. I made up a die from a 10 mm shell and cut out .400" wads from my .45 veggie wads (.060"). I place the wad inside the sabot and then insert the bullet. The wad helps support the outside of the bullet that does not contact the sabot (like used to be used with washers in the .50) So today I shot five shots with the 200 gr. SST's with these wads inserted. The load however, was not one that had produce blown sabots so I don't really know if they do the job . When Herman and I did occasionally (very) blow a sabot, the load was pushing 3000+ fps. In any event, no sabot was blown but I don't think it helped accuracy? Group #1
By the way..........Herman was hunting and not shooting with us today........I called him on his cell and told me he got a 7 Pt. buck yesterday with the .45 ML shooting this 3000+ fps load and the SST. He got the deer at 225 yards.........Right in the head
I said: "did you aim there?" He responded NO, he was aiming for the neck ;D. He said it "blew his brains out!!!!!" Way to go Herman
OK, the blems...........See group #2 After shooting this group I immediately went to 300 yards with it.......see Group #3. Not outstanding, but the first three in 2.3" ain't too shabby for blem?
For group 4 I used the same charge but switched to the 195 Barnes which I shaved the base and brought the weight down to around 190. (also made a 3 click scope change to the right and was actually aiming at the target below.) This bullet shoots somewhat faster and has a higher BC and hence went that much higher.
#5 was nothing to write home about.

Deadon..........Notice how I switched to the larger round targets like we talked about? Its easier to line up thicker crosshairs in the center of the circle rather than on those tiny dots.
