Too much head space and the bolt wont close, too little and the primer wont seal and you would get blow back which would probably enlarge the ventliner quickly. Mike

Mike Mike: Please define your use of the words, to much and to little, I believe that your wording is very confusing and may be inacurate in the description of "to much" meaning large and "to little" meaning small/tight. I believe that Mike is saying that if the barrel is screwed in TOO FAR that the bolt won't close, and if it is not screwed in FAR ENOUGH that the primer won't seal very well.

Rusty:
It is my understanding that if the head space is to much/ to large then the primer is not being fully seated into the primer pocket and can cause ignition problems of the primer and also allow more blow back, this situation will also leave room for carbon to build in the base of the primer pocket.
To little/ to tight: This is when there isn't enough room for the primer's length, as you close the bolt there is a great deal of resistance or you can not get it closed. Carbon build up in the base of the primer pocket can cause this situation. Also if the primer fits the pocket very tight and opening the bolt has loosened your breech plug, a loose breech plug can cause to little or to tight a head space.
I like to see some resistance in closing the bolt to fully seat the front of the primer tightly in the base of the prime pocket.
I think there was/is a very good thread in the build section on head spacing a savage ML10II
