Next 3 weekends will be sitting in the woods with a doe tag...and not shooting. The rut is beginning to show up and I don't want to miss it. The digital camera will be my weapon and the goal is to capture some nice bucks in bow range.
Anyone else keep hunting after you kill an early buck? Or at least stay in the woods? I just can't seem to imagine missing this part of the season just because I have already filled the buck tag. Good thing for doe tags to keep me out there.
I wish NYS would allow a hunter to fill his regular season buck tag anytime he wanted. Would surely use it to trophy hunt in bow for the big one.

Wilms, I have always appreciated that Arkansas allows us to kill 3 deer with a bow: 3 does or up to 2 bucks and a doe. This is the limit for deer killed by any means. We can kill them anytime in any season. All at once if desired(On Oct 1, 1990 I killed 2 does and 1 buck within 30 minutes of each other, 2 at one time, with an Oregon bow at 55 yds - all fell within 10 yds of each other). Note: other parts of Arkansas allows up to 5 deer total killed by any legal means, anytime. Sorry for your law as it is.

This will kill you ,Most seasons is a deer(doe) a day and in gun 2 a day, at the same time if you want. archery 3 bucks 1 fall 1 late fall 1 winter/ shot gun/muzzle loader 2 bucks you do the math . I'm getting to old to ;)drag more than one at a time unless I have help(game cart)and yes in gun you can shoot 2 does and 1buck all ;Dat the same time and still hunt tomorrow and do it again. The only good thing about New Jersey

The only good thing about New Jersey I started to post that I like your humor but believe you are serious.

Wilms, consider that there are way more hunters than there are legal bucks in NY. Regular season gun hunters are the largest part of the hunting population. Early season bowhunters already get the first crack at the bucks (not to mention the peak of the rut). You've already got it way better than most. I've let some of the better bucks I've ever had opportinites at go after taking one in the bow season.

I'm not terribly upset DB. I do agree that we have it very good.
Regarding your argument about deer vs hunters.....I think mathmatically you are correct if you want to use licence sales but in all reality using that same logic, deer populations continue to rise. Either folks are not getting out there....get out once or twice and aren't really serious about the sport....or they are not as proficient as you or I.
I always get in a little funk when I score early. Bow or gun. I call it post shot syndrome. Others at camp are still very "in the zone" and excited with optimism in seeing a good buck and getting a shot.
My perfect season would be to shoot a big buck at last light of the last day of bow and gun seasons. It's never happened.
I would also say that 1 or 2 deer a day all season would be weird...

we have a combination tag with a two buck limit, 2nd being a min. 4pt on one side. Shoot em both in archery, or both in gun/ML, or one in each season.
Doe tags are 5 per day for this area, not sure how many I'll take yet, depends if the "neighbors contribute to the cause" which I'll guess they won't as they have always frowned upon it.

We only get one buck tag per year here in Ky. That's why I won't shoot one unless it's worthy of the wall. No way, I'm going to hunt in cold weather for does. It would kill me to hunt the rut for does and not be able to shoot a big trophy buck, should he appear. Not knocking you for doing it, though, that's just me.

I know exactly what you're saying and how you feel when you vent one right away. As for the expanding populations, you control deer numbers by removing does, not trophy bucks!

You are right again DB. That's why we try for a 3-1 doe buck kill ratio. We have been successful for about 6 years. Couldn't agree with you more
