Gentlemen,so after reading in this forum all the praise for the Harvester black crushed rib sabot,,I order some. In my package also came 6 loosely packed Scorpion PT gold 300 grain bullets. So I went to the range today, loaded some Barnes original with the black crushed rib. Three shot group wasn't any better that the orange MMP sabot groups. Then I tried some Hornady 250 grain with black MMP sabots. Nothing to rant about there either. So then I said the heck with it and loaded up those Scorpion PT golds. Well holly schnicky!!!!!!!!! They stacked each other consistently every shot. My question is does anyone know who might sell these bullets in stores around Wisconsin? Harvester gets allot for shipping UGH!!!! By the way,I was shooting 44 grains of 5744 powder. Thanks Guys

Now I really feel like a chump. These things loaded super easy by the way. So when I called Harvester, the guy told me that I need to be using the red 50 caliber sabot, instead of the black. I had read on here that guys were using the Barnes original with the black crushed rib. UGH!!!!!!!!!

Orion, The Barnes Original is a .458 diameter bullet, and should use the Harvester Black CR. I have an idea that the Scorpion is a .452. Thus the need for a different sabot. BH

Scorpion Gold PTs run a bit on the small side, roughly .451+. Ive checked 3 boxes ive bought in the last year and all of them were a bit small.

Orion -
Who cares what sabot Harvester told you you "need"? If your gun stacks those PT golds with the Black CR sabot, then by all means, go with it! Let your gun tell you what it likes. It may not be what everyone else's gun likes, but if it shoots great for you, then that's perfect.
If you're going for whitetail, I wouldn't hesitate to use the PT gold 300 grain. It may not be as tough as a BO, but it's a fine bullet.

Thanks for the input Guys. I talked to the guys at Harvester and they said that due to the fact that Savages run somewhat larger in diameter, they recommend the red crushed rib. They were surprised that they shot at all. UGH They REALLY loaded easy with hardly minimal resistance. But did they stack them on the target!!! What I am afraid of is that I will lose velocity if I continue to shoot them. The sabot bases were not tattered and EVERY sabot that I found from Harvester still had the petals attatched. Even when I was shooting the Barnes Original with them. I could only get a 2 inch group at 50 yards with the BO.

It appears your 10ML-II is like mine that doesn’t require a real tight load to perform. But I feel a load that is considered easy or loose will give you problems down the road with ambient temperature changes. Here I would suggest trying the regular black Harvester sabot that would tighten your load some more.
With a 30-40lb load resistance in my 10ML-II I find I get excellent all around performance and consistency.

I would try the Black Smooths also but like you i have a gun that will shoot some loose fitting combos FAR better than reviews have indicated. The Smooth is about .001 larger OD and loads pretty easy also.
My Savage has a tighter bore than my Extreme 50 so they may be just fine with the right powder and the BCR sabot itself seems to handle heavy loads pretty well. Ive never blown one and they seldom lose a petal although i dont consider petal loss as a failure if it shoots well.

I shot the Scorpions 300 and 260 grain bullets in the black crush rib. They worked great, in warm (75+) temps. In cooler temps, I had misfire issues due to the loose fit.
BUT- here's the thing. I'm shooting Vihta Vouri N-120, which needs that snug fit. With you shooting AA 5744, you might be okay. Everything I've heard about 5744 says that it's very reliable and easy to ignite. So as long as you don't experience any misfire issues (test it in low temps!), I'd keep shooting the load if you're happy with it.

I shot the 300gr with the crushed red today and 68 gr of rl10x . at 100y it was just under 4" group. that is the only powder i had today and this is the same powder I shot with my B/O's and black crushed and get 1" groups with. even with the red/c/r the still went in easy..I will try some other powder next time.
