I have shot 250 grain bullets for many years in my .50 savage with not many issues. I bought some 300 grain Barnes Originals to try along with some reloader 10x powder this year. Tried 72 grains to start using a black crush rib sabot, but am not getting good groups at all (about 2.5"@100yds). I then backed the load down to 70 grains, and still no improvement. I also tried mmp orange sabots, but these loaded very inconsistent. Some slid right down the barrel (way to loose) others were only slightly tight. The groups with these sabots had fliers that were way off. I finally went back to my "base" load of 45 grains of N110 with a 250 grain xtp, MMP short black sabot and my groups were right back at about 1.0" @100yds.
Am i going the right direction by reducing the 10x load? Is there another powder that works when this one doesn't?

You should probably go with around 58 to 60 gr. of N-120 or 65 to 67 gr. of H-4198 with the black crush rib. These are the most common powders for that bullet/sabot. Or, any of the .458" bullets. Richard

Yeah, I'd look at the powder as the problem rather than the bullet.

Back off of the N110 to 42 grns and use the BO with the BCR and see what happens. This shot very well for me.Ditto on the N120,H4198,R-7 and last but not least 44 grn of AA5744.The orange MMPs were all over the scale for me as well. Thats why I dont use them any more.

I couldn't get 10x to group as well, I'm trying to give almost a full pound of it away.

Try going a couple grains higher than 72, I believe a couple guys are shooting 74-75gr of 10X with sub MOA accuracy. Of the slower powders, 10X is the most accurate as a single in my gun.

I got pretty good accuracy in one of my 50s by putting 10 gr N-110 or A-5744 under 60 gr 10X. That was with a 300 gr Barnes Original and Harvester Black CR. BH

I use 68gr of 10x and get 1" groups at a 100y,when i was using 72gr of 10x my groups where 1.5-1.75" at 100y and there was only 50fps slower at 2350+ fps. I used the black crushed sabot and a B/O
