Anybody have any ignition problems with RL-7 in real cold weather were talking -15 to -20 F What loads did you use, I like the Barnes 290 TMZ.

I'm wondering the same thing myself. Right now I'm shooting 4759 with 300 xtp but would like more speed for longer shots and was wanting to try rl7. It gets very cold here in Nebraska

A good tight fitting sabot and CCIM or Fed 209A and you sholdn't have any issues.

Outlander:
It totally amazes me that you haven't done the testing yourself by loading the rifle and placing it in your freezer over night to do your own front line testing to see what powders you want to use. Or even what sabots will hold up to the heavy charges you want at sub zero temps.
Load your rifle with your experiment and place it in the freezer over night. this will give you confidence in the load, and it's components.

Outlander
Did the freezer thing with it and had no problem but a freezer is normally only 0 degrees F. I too had the same question but hopefully it wont get colder than that here this season.
Good hunting!

I have 2 freezers and neither is large enough to accomadate my savage so rather than buy a 3rd freezer I thought I'd utilize resources that have used RL-7 in cold temps. I have only found this website this year so I have not had a winter to experiment with. I felt it would be quicker to use experience over experimentation. Thanks for everyones help.

Makes sense to me. Why would you experiment yourself if others have already done it? In my opinon, the only way you're going to run into an ignition issue with R7 and magnum primers with a tight sabot fit is if you're taking a loaded gun in and out of an warmer area, and even then, you'd probably be fine. That being said if you don't unload, I'd leave the gun outside in the garage or something. And I would put it in the trunk or truck bed when traveling to my hunting spot.

CCI mag or Fed Mag I have heard are the most consistant, I use CCI and have had no issues with firing in -25 C weather with SR4759 powder.

outlander, have you considered working up a load with both 4198 and RL7, then when those type of temps hit load and leave your gun in the garage, then the next day see if it will fire? If they don't you can always hunt with your proven load.
Reading what has worked for others is always beneficial but knowing for sure based on your own testing is the ultimate confidence builder.

Good hunting! Thats one way I torture tested AA5744. I also left it out in double digit minus temps and took it in and out of the house for 9 days straight. AA5744 will go boom everytime.
