well a friend has had me busy working on mlIIs this week, bedding a factory laminate; checking plugs ; bases ;scopes;etc and today we shot them at the range, mine included. the bedded lam gun shot @11/2@ 100 with 69 grns 4198 and bos while his gun shot all over. I pulled his plug and the flame channel was carboned all the way to the primer with a .50 hole for the flame to travel. I have never seen a plug with this much carbon in it. the vent was right at .50, no wonder it wouldnt shoot. but as it turns out he also has a bulged barrel. It appears to be at about the front sight.
Question; do you guys have a number for Joe Degrande?
Or does someone have a factory take off .50 he could buy? I sold mine last year to someone on here.
Buy the way i shot my 28"pacnor .45 and shot a .437 for five shots with 60 grns 4198; blue harv; 200 sst; fed primer 2732 avg mv
also tried 15/55 n110/130 duplex with same set up and got 1.200 for five @ 3080 mv it was a little warm on the sabots (flared ) and will need some tweaking but it sure is smokin
will post pics when I get a chance......Bill

He is lucky he did not have more problems like ruptured primers. Is the barrel bulged at the rear sight or the front sight? Usually it is at the rear sight.

If there appears to be a bulge by the muzzle....is it possible you are feeling the QLA? I'm not an enginneer but find the front end a strange place to have a bulge.

sorry guys I misinformed you on the bulge location, it is at the rear sight not the front. I got three offers for barrels and one is in the works so thanks for helping a Savage brother out; he will be relieved. thanks.....Bill

I also had a friend call me to inquire about accuracy problems with his new Savage...............After going on and on, he reluctantly admitted he bulged the barrel. He admitted it was his fault. Had a tight sabot and did not get it seated all the way down. He is in contact with Joe Degrande also. My observations since I started smokeless muzzleloading has been that bulged barrels are mostly the result of shooter error i.e. double charging or loads not seated. I have not heard much in the way of "hot" charges causing the problems? Richard
