After discussions with moderators and members,i've decided to get
rid of my little gun powder. I do have at my disposal the followings:
sr 4759,n-110,benchmark. And i do shoot a 300 grain precision rifle
dead center bullet ( 44x50)
I would like to acheive anything close to 2500 fps.
Any suggestion in either duplex or single powder charge ?
thanks

marsh,
you wont make that much speed using any of the powders you listed unless you duplex N110 and Benchmark.
If it was me I would use 44-47 grain of 4759 and not worry about the speed. You should be able to get very good accuracy and reliable ignition. 300 grain lead bullets are not as prone to misfire as the lighter lead bullets.
Good luck, Mike

You have to look on the back of the package to see if it is 44/50 or 45/50. The 45 may be a snugger fit and the sabot being thinner may help also.. Just my 2, Rusty

mike, the reason i want to acheive that speed,is to get the maximum '' knockdown'' power,
where i hunt, the longest shot i might take is about 90 yards, and i want that deer to go down
almost instantly !!

I'll guarantee whitetail deer wont feel the difference between 2200 fps and 2500 fps using a 300 grain bullet. Unless you shoot a neck, high shoulder shot or spine them, they will most likely run off a small distance anyway. Mike

I shoot a 45/70 at deer quite often when hunting. Even with remington factory loads doing only 1650 FPS they hit like a wrecking ball. the deer go down instantly, no tracking. I hunt in a situation where if the deer runs 40 yards you may never find it. and this is one of the most reliable DRT loads I have found. This and a 6.5x55 with a 140 game king doing 2500 fps. But the 300 grain 45/70 has about the same range of velocities that you can achieve with the 10 ML. Doesn't matter how fast or slow it is going, it kills deer. My bullet of choice is a 300 gr. Rem HP. I would avoid the 325 FTX as this is the only 45/70 projectile I have seen deer run from, 2 of 2 ran over 100 yards. Anyway, don't sweat the velocity. You got plenty of kill at 90 yards regardless of the load, and actually the hot loads may not perform as well because it is beyond the ideal impact velocity that most 45 300 grain projectiles were designed for. Could cause penetration issues. Heavily constructed bullets are not the bet medicine for deer.

thanks for the advise, i will then work for this season with 45grain of sr 4759,along with 300 gr. dead center bullet ( 44x50).
if i'm lucky,i'll will post the pics !!
And after the season, for the sake of it,carefully work a duplex load with n-110 and benchmark,
good season everybody

Why not just spring for a can of H-4198? You can use it as a single and get 2500 or duplex it with your N-110 for reliability and still get 2500? Seems like $25 for a pound of powder is a small price to pay in comparrison to all the other costs involved in hunting? And, you are getting what you want? Richard.............my $0.02

Marsh,
I think you will be better off using 4759 this season until you get more confidence shooting your gun. Slower powders need more pressure to ignite and burn and 4759 easily does both. Besides a 300 grain bullet going 2500 fps is a killer on both ends of the gun. Mike

mike, what i meant in the above was:is instead of trying to duplex the benchmark, after this season,i will experiment the h-4198, AND keep the benchmark for my 223 rem. !!
i will definitely hunt with the sr-4759,45 grain of it, and as a member wrote at 90 yards
it should do the job.
thanks
