I looked a little with the search feature but did not find the info i wanted.
First, is anyone using 50x40 MMPs or Harvesters in a Savage with either BH209 or smokeless powders? I havent seen any 50x40 data so im assuming it isnt very good or very common.
Second, one of the new loads i like in my Knight Extreme 50 is the Barnes .458 SOCOM with a boattail. I use the MMP Orange and some others use the Harvester Yellow but the Harvester Yellow is really tight in my Knight 50.
I want to try these in my Savage when it arrives. Has anyone had luck with 300gr boattails in either sabot? BH209 or smokeless data is fine. Boattail bullet data also seems a tad uncommon.
Thank you

Ok thank you, i shoot a few 40cal 225gr-260gr bullets and long for caliber 40cals and wanted to try them in the 1-24 twist. BH209 performance level is fine as long as they stabilize. My current 45s are 1-30 and 1-28 so i thought it would be an interesting comparison.
Has anyone tried the Harvester Yellow CRs for boattails with any luck? When loaded with a .458 bullet they should be very close to a the Harvester Red "smokeless" sabot OD with .452s.

I blew every Harvester Yellow and Orange CR I tried with boat tail bullets, even with mild loads. The MMPs, that the Barnes BTs come with, shot fair at low and med loads. Boarhog

Boarhog Thank you, i had the same experience with the 50x40 Crushribs and the 40-260grs. The sabot would blow before it would stabilize well. I have plenty of MMP Oranges so i might try a little knurling on the SOCOMS to tighten them up....or just use my Barnes O 300gr SS instead. Im only hoping to get a bit more fps than 120gr of BH209 can deliver so im not a 50cal FPS junkie....yet

They may be great options in the .45 saboted Hawks 225gr Hollow point with a .025 jacket. They have a variety of heavy 40s including Semi Spitzers but you need to call them. Website is not updated so it doesnt show all the options. Xtreme Bullets for punching paper. They are 200-220gr thick plated RNFPs and excellent weight variations. IMO the best plated bullet without a hollow point for the price and practice. Meister .406 hard cast RNFP for old 40/60-65 cartridges i resized to .401. I shoot these at just 1950fps with 100gr BH209. Mostly a plinker too but pentration is insane with 18BHN hardness. RedLine Ballistics 220gr cast TCFP is also another very cheap plinker And Lehighs 185 or 200gr DOA. Some pics of the 40s The Barnes .458 M/LE SOCOMS

Thanks. When you said long and posted those weights, I was hoping you found something in .40 that was both longer and heavier than the lehighs you posted, similar to what some have approached Parker about making.

Thank you I used to use the MMP 50/40 sabots with XTP 200gr using up to 41 gr of 4759 or 4227. Wouldn't recommend 4227 because of occasional no fires, but 4759 should be a good load at moderate speed. Still well over 2000 fps and quite adequate for deer. Very tight sabot fit and accuracy for me was 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" most days.

If i could get the 200gr SST or XTPs into the 2300-2400 FPS range that is plenty for my needs. Im not looking to get a 50x40 into the 2500fps+ range.
My Knights and Accura 45 can get them upto about 2200fps accurately so a slight boost with less powder than BH209 is the goal.
Eventually i want a faster twist 45 but would prefer a 1-24 twist 45cal that is smokeless capable but i will still use BH209 sometimes too.
The Hawks 225gr HP im still working up a good load but sofar im close to the 2100fps area with 1.5" or better 100 yard groups in my Elite 45 1-30 and faster 1-28 twist Accura 45.
Sofar i havent got the 200gr Lehigh to shoot as well as the 185gr but im trying the Harvester smooth tomorrow to see if that helps.

My Knights and Accura 45 can get them upto about 2200fps accurately so a slight boost with less powder than BH209 is the goal. . . . . . . . . I used some Ranier 200gr with 41.5gr of 4759. They gave me a speed a bit over 2200fps. Accuracy on a hot day with those was about 2" at 100. Never tried anything above 41gr of 4759 on a cool day with 200gr bullets and didn't have velocity data. Ranier's are possibly just a bit less accurate than the XTPs but probably not much. That's pretty close to what you listed as desirable velocity range. I shot a couple deer with 200gr XTPs with 41gr of 4759 and they were quite effective. Both were lung shots on does and neither went very far. If you don't try to go crazy on velocity, and the pressures required to get it, the 50/40 sabots will likely work fine. If you find a shredded sabot then back off your load a couple grains and try again. The Harvester 50/40 sabots were not available when I was using the 50 but reports indicate they are likely a better choice.
