For several year, folks have been posting of the need for fouling shots, one or many, and the need for a dirty barrel.
My question for any of the wise men is:
Why is it that in both my Savage rifles the first shot, is almost alway one of the best in the group.
After each range session, I clean my rifles, as well as I can, barrel, BP and vent liner.
I pop a primer to make sure, there is no oil on the vent liner.
Am I the only one that doesn't use a fouling shot?
Both my rifles a Ball .50 and a Rick Bibby Special are super accurate, even with a soon to be 77 year old shooter

bigmoose, dont know but i have accurately set up over 600cf's& mz's, some very few,the fouler is in the group but most say approx 95% wants the fouler & locks in. i never shoot my fouler shot w/oil in barrel,if stored, one carb/patch to remove oil,i wish i knew also. some of these are custom match grade barrels & some factory, seeing no difference either way.

Popping the primer leaves residue similar to the first fouling shot of others?

The primer does leave some residue, as much as a primer plus 68grs of H4198, i think not.
but what do I know.

SNIP. Why is it that in both my Savage rifles the first shot, is almost alway one of the best in the group. SNIP. I might interpret that as the first shot is closest to your POA, but the odd man out of the ensuing group If that is correct, then for a hunting ML that is probably a good thing, but not best for a target shooter. edge.

Sir Edge,
As lots of folks do, I use a three inch yellow bulleye, with a 1/2" double tri-angle in the center.
I am please to say my first will be in or 1/4 0r 1/2" from the tri-angel, unless its a one hole group, wiping out the tri-angle [SMILE} As for hunting, I don't have any game to testify about my shooting, What I do Have is pictures of very dead animal, of course they might have died of old age. {SMILE PLUS 5} Gee I don't like the way that sounds.....Old Age

I swab between shots with my .45 Pacnor sabot-less. I don't see much difference in the point of impact between the 1st and the 5 shot. I still shoot a few primers before the first shot but hunt with the barrel fouled.

Bigmoose,
I have found that my 1st shot from a clean gun is also very acceptable...enough so that I find no reason to exclude it from my 1st group.
My knight was different. It would always put a clean shot high a few inches. Always hunted with a foul barrel with that gun.
I have also found that after 5 or six shots from a completely cleaned vent, my groups get tighter. Than after a sweet spot of about a dozen shots, groups open slightly.
After sticking many patches while shooting, I decided to stop swabbing last year or the year before. Just load and shoot. I have not seen any real positive or negative results on the target. Just less work.
Just my experience.

Whyohe,
No I'm afraid of the answer, although I'm sure you are fine.
Wilmsmeyer, Since a lot of my shooting is sabotless and I favor a tight fit, I have to run a patch, every other shot I use alcohol to clean and cool. I know you like big boomers, If you would like I'll send you some Barnes 400gr buster Bullets, with 70 or 71 grs of benchmark the penetration of this round has to be seen to believe, It post the exact numbers as a 404 Jefferies, a well respected Elephant round.

Thanks Bigmoose,
I will decline the generous offer. This year I have been playing with the 325 FTX with startling results accuracy wise at high speed.
Knowing you shoot these bombers gives me pleasure knowing I still have quiet a ceiling left if I get "antsy" shooting such a light load. ;D

Offer is open as long as I am upright.
Its a fun round to shoot, however my friends think Ive lost my mine, I hear stuff like how many Elephants are there in Weston.. My answer is I'm still looking, if I find them I'll be ready.
