Well, today broke crisp and clear in Western NC. 7:00 a.m. found Herman, Bill and myself at our club range. The temperature started out at 50* and was up to 70 by the time we left at 12:30 p.m.
I started the session out by shooting a very generic load which was 58 gr. of H-4198 with a TAN mmp sabot and a 200 gr. Renier (copper plated lead bullet that resembles and XTP). These bullets and particularly the tan mmps rarely shoot very good. I usually just use them to foul the barrel. Well, surprise? At least the first three shot............Hmmmmmmmmmm not bad. Then the fourth and fifth (while the velocity remained good) decided to shoot to a different POI? (no cool rod for these first five shots) so, I had only one more charge left. I cooled the barrel and shot it?? Out of either group? Like I said, they have always shot inconsistently.
The next three targets I used an experimental load. As you can see, the results, while not super impressive, were pretty decent. On the first group, I even took the last load and completely reversed the way it went down the barrel. If you look, the bullet was only maybe 1/4" out of the group and the velocity was within ONE fps different than the other four.
Next I shot the same load at 300 yds. and got just over moa.
Again, with the same load I substituted the NEW Barnes 195 bullet. On the first shot, I mistakenly used the first stadia line instead of the second, which was my intention. The next four were shot with the second line. So, I raised shot #1 up where it would have gone. So, 3 in 1.5" and 5 in 3.5" seemed OK to me?
Overall, the load, for twelve shots from the above groups, averaged 2765 fps.
For group #5, I substituted a different main charge but with the same powder amount. I had a feeling this load would be slower and it was. But still produced pretty decent results.
The last load was a duplex which I had toned down from 10/60 to 10/55 and it was OK also.
The experimental loads will get more attention, looking to put them in the 2800 fps category even though they could match the duplex's. What I am liking about them is the reduced perceived recoil. Both Herman and Bill have noted it last week and also this week.
As a matter of fact, I had Herman shoot the second shot in the first experimental load...........He put the bullet into my first shot. That brought a big smile to his face.
