Received new batch of 300gr Rem .458HP that shoot so well in my .50 and immediately felt they were loading little easier and I my groups went lower. Batch came from Cabelas. I don't have any old ones left to measure and compare. New ones miked at .4560" and if I remember correctly the old ones were .4575". Will someone put your calipers on ones you have? If I have a bad batch I will call Cabelas,to see what they say. I have pretty loose barrel-have to use Harvester Crush Ribs to begin with and if this batch is bad-I can't shoot these. Thanks for your time! olegburn

I have them from two lots, both .4573 they are called .457 so this is why they are loading a little easier than I .458-.459 I would imagine. Those things just flat out shoot accurate, it doesn't matter what rifle or ML you put them in it seems. and are instant death on deer at 45/70 or 10 ML velocities (they run in the same range) Opens upa lot but dumps a ton of energy in the deer. the first one I shot with that bullet acted like he had been hit broadside with a wrecking ball. I giggled like a little girl and have been sold ever since.

Also they are not supposed to be advertised as .458, Remington states in all of their data that the bullet is .457. They are exactly what they are supposed to be. I just noticed your issue, sorry. Call remingto, they will accept them back and replace them.

I love these bullets. I hope this is just a QC issue and not a permanent change. I have a tight barrel and have a real tough time getting BOs down my ML. The remingtons are tight but go down smooth and group really well (close to MOA). They are also easier on the budget.

My Savage loves the Rem.'s as well. The bullets I have are older and are .457's. Probably the best performer/priced bullet I've used. Excellent deer bullet!! Although I've never recovered one for weight retention data. Hope they didn't change a good thang!!

I just measured 5 bullets each from a pack I ordered over a year ago, and a box of 100 I just received from Midway. They all measured .4575. Frankly, I was surprised that I found no bullet to bullet variation in either batch. Boarhog

I hope it is not one more thing that I need watch out for when buying supplies. Here is quote from Remington rep. reply:
"The ,456'' measurement is within the SAAMI spec tolerance for the 45-70 which is .458'' +/- .002'. The bullet will generally expand due to its soft nature and will create an adequate seal in the bore once the heat from the powder charge is ignited and exposed to the bullet base. I would not think this would represent a problem in actual firing. Did you shoot any of them and see what result you had?
I replied with the explanation, again, that it is ML that I use them in, and .002" do make a difference. We'll see what happens... oleg

Maybe you could knurl those .456s up a little. SAAMI specs are fine and dandy but we are not forcing these things into the rifling.

DBinNY, to them (Remington) we are small market and I understand that. I will look for other suppliers besides Cabelas (hopefully someone with old stock). I will try knurling, but even with .4575" bullets in a HCR sabot I didn't have really tight load-enough to shoot consisitantly, but I don't see how I can upsixe it much . But I may still give it a try. Or,I may try shot MMP sabot... Who knows?
