I have been working on my son's MLII, and the only thing it will shoot accurately is .458 diametere 300 grain (hornady or BO) with BCR (black crush rib). This load will go 1.75 inch consistently. Load pressure is 45 to 50 pounds (estimated) to go down the bore
I would prefer to have him shoot a 250 grain bullet, but have tried the 250 XTP with a vairety of sabots I have on hand and they all load way to easy for my liking. (Anything from two fingers to an easy one handed.) They all went bang, but accuracy was abysmal. Two or three of five shots may group, but others will be 4 to five inch flyers. Same results for 250 SST with sabots that came in combo pack.
Reviewing some older posts, it appears the RCR (red crush rib) may give me some more thickness with 250 bullets.
Any other suggestions on what else I should order to give a try?

Try knurling to get a tighter fit.

The RCR gives the largest loaded diameter of the sabots available with a .452 bullet. PM me your address and I'll send you some to try if you don't have any.

Knurl up the 250s or give them a paper patch roll or cross. Makes them fit much tighter in the sabot and the sabot tighter in the barrel. I think there are some 250 .458s available. Might look at some of the bullet sites for same. They be listed as 45-70 bullets. 10

Try the XTP with the MMP short black sabot. I believe this combo is even tighter than the red crushed rib. If it still feels too loose with this combo I would send it back to have a land to land bore measurement done at Savage.

Have to agree with savagebeast. If the short mmps work they are cheaper than the others. I started useing the shorts again last year and have shot quite a few shots with them up 2700+fps and they hold up well,in fact I shot some of the hph12 and the shorts this past tuesday with duplex loads and they did the same. The shorts went down the barrel a little tighter than the 12's.

I just pushed a .452 in both an RCR and MMP short black through a buddies accura yesterday, the MMP was easier to push through. Could be a difference in plastic formulation though?

I had a loose bore 50cal before I went to my 45PCNR. As I recall, the RCR gave me the tightest fit with the 452 bullets.

Thanks for all the responses. I ordered some RCR and short MMPs.
Rangeball - thanks for the offer, but I currently reside in Massachusetts ( unofficial motto "live free or here").. I suspect it would not be legal for you to send them to me unless I sent you the proper documentation. I kid you not. I had to send MidSouth SS a signed affidavit and a copy of my LTC. and I appreciate their willingness to do business with someone in Mass. Some major vendors just refuse to ship anything here.
