I'm a new owner to the smokeless side of muzzleloading. I have a fairly new savage I bought from a trusted friend but have not shot. I have a few very knowledgeable guys helping me with the "correct" load. The guy I bought it from said it shot the Hornady FTX 45 cal .452 bullet loaded with mmp sabot and 65.8 grains of Vihtavuori N 120 really well. I can't help but notice most of the other guys are shooting in the 54-57 grain range. Is this load safe to shoot or too hot. I've seen some bad pictures of guns blowing up causing severe damage. The guys said at 100 yds when they shot it it was a 1 inch group. I just need to hear this load is safe! Please give you thoughts.

Your load is fine. I have shot 250 grainers with N120 up to 69 grns but accuracy fell off. The 56-60 grn you mentioned is for 300 grn bullets. If that puppy is printing 1 in groups go kill some deer! In regard to your fears concerning guns blowing up,dont fret. They were the direct result of human error.Dont shoot your ram rod, bore guide. or double load and you will be fine!

Bigheadt If you ever want to verify the safety of your load for the 50 or any other smokeless caliber go to the top where the sub-boards are located and follow along like you would any thread here. There are many different loads listed that have been used. Hope this helps. Ed

These fellow gave some very good advise. If you want to know about a load just check it out in the loads section. The 69 gr load worked great for me out to 300 yds, have shot up to 70 grs with the 250 gr bullet. And 60 grs with the 300 grs. If your'e 65.8 load is shooting good for you it may shoot a tad tighter now since the weather is cooling off some.
