I posted this under the build section, but am new here and I think I may have added a comment to the sticky section at top. I apologize if I did. However,
Guys I am new here and just now registered. I really want to build my own smokeless ML as I have a spare Short Action Staggered Feed from the 308 family that I would love to build a ML with. Can anyone give me the contact info for Pete at PA Machine or whoever I need to get one of the 45ACP primer systems. Also, am I correct to think that all I need to do is order a Pacnor (does anyone else make prefit Savage ML barrels) barrel, and the 45ACP primer system? Any advice is greatly appreciated. I currently have an Encore but am tired of cleaning it. I planned on buying a Savage, but then noticed this thread and thought of the Action I have laying around. Thanks

Thanks for the reply and the contact info. I will email Pete now to see if I can come across one of the breech plugs. Also, I couldn't find any link to Savage ML barrels on the Pacnor sight, but have read were they keep them ready to go. Is there something else I should be looking for? Finally, with the breech design using 45ACP cases, when you load the powder from the muzzle, does it fill the actual 45 case? It seems as if the powder doesn't actually go in the case, then there would be a pretty big jump for ignition of the powder. I guess if it filled the case, there would be a jump of the charge until it reached the bullet. I guess my question is do these conversions using Centerfire actions shoot as good as a Savage 10ML with an equivalent barrel?

Edge or Dave D will have to give you the dimensions of the plug length as well as flame channel length-1.2" maybe. The Remingtons that Dave D converted were/are tack drivers, he has posted more long distance sub MOA groups than anyone that I can recall. If the shooter is capable, I see no reason that this would not be a good platform to build on. Send DaveD or Edge a pm if they do not respond. Edge has built a gun off the Savage CF action so he can give you better advice than I can.

My build was for a heavy barrel without a barrel nut and has a very short breechplug. Since I did all the work myself it is not the same as the Pac-Nor barrel and do not want to give you bum information.
Dave d. would know all the details for the Pac-Nor barrel and for the BP from PA Machine.

sorry I didn't see this sooner. Yes spook you need to order a standard savage dd barrel from pacnor(thanks hunter) and a savage plug that excepts acp's from pete at Pa machine and your set. If you have any questions feel free to pm me. Have fun building your rifle.

I think Dave d. meant to say to order a standard savage dd barrel from pacnor.

I am also looking to build a ML on a savage SA in .45cal., would a 28" barrel be better?, I don't care about the weight. Is one twist rate better also? thanks, Mark

I have a 28" and love it , it is long and heavy but it is a lights out shooter. the dd standard from pacnor is all the barrel you will need, lots of guys here have them and they all shoot well

I double length beyond 26" will get you much else but a very heavy rifle. I would go twist anywhere 1:22 down to 1:16. The 1:22 will do most of the bullets out there now; I have one but am concerned that one day I will find one I wish I'd had a faster twist for.
As Dave will tell you, you'll be better off using cut down .308 or .243 cases for primer carriers, they will fit the .45ACP plug but the web thickness (head of the case) is more consistent...at least for the ones I measured. You have to be within a couple thousandths to properly fit and headspace the barrel.
If you don't receive an email from Pete in a couple days I would call him, he was more responsive over the phone for me. The plug I received is top notch work.
