Well, Edge wanted me to include all foulers to just see where these shot go! As I indicated in last weeks post, this week will probably make a liar (opps thats "A Red Flag") out of me........and it did ;D. I shot the exact same load as last week putting foulers and record shots on the target....for a five shot group. Note: if you reference it to where the shots printed last week? I had made a scope adjustment to move the group to the right. But size wise, it was similar although only five shots.
Next, while the conditions were the same, I went to 300 yards and still using the same aiming point, fired another five shot group. This group move some four inches to the right (the 100 yard group was already about 1" to the right so only four inches from the 100 yd. POI) AND 14.5" low from POA.
For the purpose of giving a good indication on how much bullets drop from 100 to 300 yards, I don't think it can be any clearer than these two targets. So, 2.5" high at 100 and 14.5 low at 300 yards with a 200 gr. (pointed slightly) Hornady XTP, Blue Harvester (smooth) sabot traveling and average of 3040 fps. This is "hands on" no BS solid information. So what the real world drop is at "2700 fps" I would try it, but I don't think my rifle shoots that slow ;D Seriously, it has got to be a lot more?
While the rifle and rest were set up for 300, I used the same load along with a 180 gr. Hornady XTP (slightly pointed). The velocity went up about 75 fps. This time, I used my second stadia line to aim with and as you can see, the groups was about 2" low and 6" to the right. It also did not group as well as the 200 gr. bullet.
Next I went sabot less with the 200 gr. FTX and got some good results until I left the aluminum bore guide on the barrel (the same one I shot off this past winter and found at the 100 yd. berm? ). I asked Herman if he would shoot the fourth shot just to see how stable the improvements made my lead sled how the scope enhancer looked. Well Herman did his best and low and behold, the shot went way high and to the right??. We tried to figure out what went wrong? Oh, well! Went back to the bench to reload (oh yes, and cool the barrel) and when I went to put the bore guide on?? GONE! I left it on when Herman shot Fece' Occurs! We looked and looked and could not find it ..........Back to the lathe
Next up I shot my very best all time small group and to boot, sabot less. Same powder charge only I switched to the 225 FTX. First shot out...Two, Three and Four in .207" with shot Five making it a .578" (4) shot group.
So, back out to 300 with this great load??? NOT so great? I only had four bullets left and could only muster a 5.2" three shot and 8" four shot group Just when I thought I had found my new best load
Group 7 did not seem like it was a barn burner so I only fired three shots.
So there you have it: "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly ;D"
Next week I will be up in Edge's territory to see family and to give my gun a rest.
