O.k.,I need some help. I'm putting together two .45, one is a Savage and one is a Howa 1500. The Savage is a MLII-bp from Cabelas that just doesnt shoot that good. What is the dia. and tpi of the threaded portion? I beleive its large shank? The Howa action is a Ultimate m.z. that that rusted and I picked up cheap. Has anyone had one of these apart? Just wondering what it has for a breech plug and wondering what to use as a replacement. Are the Pac-Nor .45s the .458, 8 groove bbls. on thier website? Thanks guys, this site has been a great souce of info for me. I'm going to have a bunch of questions as I build these so bear with me please.

I'm pretty sure the Cabelas 10ML-II BP is large shank. That was one of the things that set it apart from the run of the mill 10ML-IIs. Pacnor is well practiced on that thread also so no problem. You can add some more meat to the barrel contour with a large shank barrel.
The Howa uses this weird pitch metric thread that a lot of older machines can not duplicate for the barrel shank. No telling what the boys at Ultimate did for the breech plug and they may have even changed the barrel shank/action threads. They use a cartridge case priming system so Pete in PA might be able to help you. Talk with Pacnor and if they can set up the barrel maybe Pete can modify a Savage plug. Dave D. would be a wealth of info and so would Bill Ball (1shot1kill), I think him and his dad did a couple of Howas.

:)guppy sorry about the small shank thing. That's what you get for assuming they would make them the same as the ml2 smokeless. Thanks ken for the correction.

Guppy, Just a thought, but if it was me I'd talk to NULA and tell them the story on your rifle. You may be suprised at the info you get from them. It may beat taking the long way around. Good Luck!

Thanks for the responses. I am going to start tearing these down this weekend an I should find out more on the Ultimate. I am thinking about doing the chamber work and the shank threading myself. I want to keep the price down on these as I might do another MLII-bp to .45 for a friend also, and looking to keep cost down. Has anyone ordered a finished bbl. lately? How long is the wait and approx. final price? If I can get blanks considerably quicker I will probably do them myself. Thanks again for the help, Kevin.

Look close at the Howa action threads. If they left the factory threads they will be 1.5 metric pitch which comes out to 16.9 TPI. If you have a lathe set up to cut metric threads you will be in like flint. Just do not count on finding a tap and die.
